Recently, the heads of the World Health Organisation, UNAIDS, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) produced a joint statement, Commodities for Better Health in Africa – Time to Invest Locally, In it, they argue that the new opportunities for African countries to strengthen their manufacturing sector – the result of rapidly expanding consumer markets and rising foreign investment – offers a historic opportunity for the countries to free themselves from a vicious cycle of poverty, disease and dependency. In particular, the statement suggests, it is time to invest in production of medicines and other essential health commodities.

IKD researchers are recognised as international leaders in research on local pharmaceutical production in African countries and its health impact. In December 2015 IKD, in association with UNIDO, hosted a two-day workshop Making Medicines in Africa to discuss contributions for a proposed edited book on the topic. Participants in the workshop, held at the OU in London, brought an extraordinary range of high-level experience in African and global industrial development, pharmaceutical production and markets, technology transfer and upgrading in pharmaceuticals, health policy-industrial linkages, and industrial and regulatory policies for medicines.

The final session focused on detailed discussions of the structure of the book, which will be based around industrial dynamics and policies. We look forward to bringing you more details about its publication soon.
