Open University academics recently presented research focused on international innovation at the esteemed 15th Globelics International Conference in Athens.

The conference took part in October and attracted more than 400 participants (academics and practitioners of innovation and public policy, including Greek government officials and European Union policymakers) from five continents. This year’s focus was on the uneven development of the global economy, debating the new roles for the state, productive sectors and social actors. Well-known innovation theorists such as Richard Nelson and William Lazonick discussed the role of non-market institutions in innovation and development as well as the importance of integrating theory and history in the study of innovation and economic phenomena. Other important topics debated include the relationship between innovation and democracy and the impact of new technologies on inequality and social justice.

Theo Papaioannou, Professor of Politics, Innovation and Development, presented a joint OU DPP (Development, Policy and Practice) research paper on the role of industrial associations in shaping innovation through systemic integration. He also acted as a discussant of three other papers on the economics and politics of innovation.

Dr Dinar Kale, Senior Lecturer in International Development and Innovation, presented his research work on social technologies for inclusive innovation and discussed the development of affordable healthcare technologies for low income populations in developing countries. Globelics is the Global Network for Economics of Learning, Innovation and Competence Building Systems.

You can view further research by both academics on the Open Research Online website, which makes research openly available to access. Research by Professor Theo Papaioannou; research by Dr Dinar Kale.
