Funding

Initially RAIKE is seeking funding for projects under the Third Mission funding streams and act as a research brokerage for bidding for research council and European funding.

Aims and Objectives

This research exchange seeks to bring together three interdisciplinary areas within a multi-disciplinary framework. It builds on the strengths of scholarship, research expertise and leadership, as well as research units and centres within the OUBS and The Open University. In particular, RAIKE is located as a node in the Centre for Innovation, Knowledge and Development (IKD) and seeks to promote the objectives and projects of IKD. Moreover, it seeks to be the focal point of IKD activities in OUBS. RAIKE also draws on external scholarship, expertise and resources, including renowned international learned societies and endowment institutions. These bodies are also potential funders of joint projects.

Aims

  • Establish an internationally recognised forum for pursuing scholarship of regional analysis , knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurship;
  • Establish formal and informal relationships with the leading bodies in a multi-disciplinary area;
  • Promote the reputation of the OUBS and The Open University for research in this and cognate areas of scholarship.

Objectives

  • Build research capacity through the development of internal and external collaborations
  • Establish an on-line discussion forum with potential partners and stakeholders;
  • Produce regular reports and relevant publications for internal and external dissemination
  • Hold joint events including short conferences, seminars and on-line and digital forums;
  • Liaise with other centres and faculties to develop post-graduate programmes, research projects and funding bids;
  • Create capabilities to be considered for status of Research Unit of OUBS.

RAIKE brings together three apparently discrete communities of theory, practice and policy and creates the building blocks for an intellectually coherent and multi-disciplinary research exchange. Moreover, it is positioned to undertake projects funded by "Third Mission" agencies as well as the creation of a cohort of ESRC CASE studentships and other post-graduates.

At present, RAIKE is in its infancy but it builds on IKD events and outputs. For example, the IKD one-day seminar Embedding Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Regional Development which will have its proceedings published in a special issue of Regional Studies in 2008 and the IKD-funded one-day event this May on Entrepreneurial Learning, Innovation and Development.

Project Workshop

The IKD/ISBE workshop 'Entrepreneurial Learning, Innovation and Development' which was held at the OU London regional office on May 22 was a great success. More than 40 participants came to exchange experience and views as well as to listen to the 10 presenters - ranging from David Purdy of the BERR Enterprise Directorate (formerly Small Business Service), three editors of learned journals in the entrepreneurship field, young researchers describing their cutting edge research and seasoned researchers with established international reputations. A report based on the findings and discussions will be produced and made available to IKD members. It is intended to hold a similar event next year. More information on the workshop.
