With 2 billion people online, the Internet today is an essential infrastructure which underpins the economy and society. Its social and communicative power is such that recently governments have sought to close it down in response to popular uprisings. In this talk I will give an overview of the research I have been leading in defining the Future Internet: a new global communications platform for the next decade. For single users the Future Internet should adapt to their personal needs, preferences and their current context such as the time and location. From an economic perspective supporting international business collaboration is key. Within the talk I will illustrate how we go from "I need" to online services using a selection of scenarios ranging from finding online video content to house hunting and emergency planning.
