This equipment includes larger-scale versions of items that can be purchased in the High Street. A hand-held calculator may have a large display and keys, and some have audio output rather than a screen. A clock or timer may have a large digital display, audible time readings, a louder than normal alarm or a vibrating pad instead of an audible alert. Tape measures, rulers and compasses may have Braille or audio output.
When working on a computer it is possible to have a talking scientific calculator or graphical calculator, which sounds out the waveforms. A screen reader set up to give the time, date and other reminders during the day can be a valuable support to some students.
Scientific or standard hand-held calculators, clocks, watches, timers and measuring devices are especially helpful in science laboratories, workshops, for private study and on field trips.
Many of these items are larger than the ordinary versions and may not be easily portable.
It may be necessary to encourage the student to wear headphones or an earpiece when using audio output.
LED displays can be difficult to see in certain lighting conditions so be aware that bright sunlight or a change of location may cause difficulties. Contrast levels can also be important for clarity.
