Field trips: Alternatives

It might not always be possible to put reasonable adjustments in place that will enable some students to participate in field or study trips. Then it becomes necessary to find a replacement learning experience that meets the same core learning outcomes. The following examples might provide alternatives to field trips.

• A practical project at a venue near the student’s home
• Library or museum research
• Laboratory analysis of specimens, materials or data collected on a field trip, plus watching a video of the collection activities
• A virtual field trip

Other students may only be able to attend part of the field trip and may need to leave early. Where necessary an additional activity could be provided to enable them to achieve the set learning outcomes.
