There is a group of well-known, muscle-based impairments that includes muscular dystrophy, polymyositis, myasthenia gravis and strain injury.

Muscular dystrophy, polymyositis and myasthenia gravis can all lead to weakness and sometimes pain that cause difficulty with writing and eventually speech, walking and even sitting comfortably. The medication used can affect sleep patterns and concentration.

Strain injuries can be caused by accidents, sporting events or over-use of muscles, tendons and nerves.

One of the most common issues one hears about in working environments is repetitive strain injury (RSI), which can cause a long-term impairment. RSI, like carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, bursitis and tenosynovitis, is an example of a strain injury that affects the forearm, wrist, hand and fingers. These types of strain can restrict the way a pen is handled, or a keyboard or mouse used when working at a computer. Dexterity can be diminished and pain experienced, requiring rest and recovery time.
