Damage to the brain can be an outcome of conditions such as cerebral palsy, encephalitis or traumatic head injury. It can occur at birth or later in life, or following an accident or infection. Students with damage to the brain can have difficulty with

  • progressive weakness
  • respiration
  • fatigue
  • mobility or dexterity, including stiffness, involuntary movement, poor coordination or paralysis, clumsiness and loss of balance
  • understanding and expression of spoken and written language
  • emotional effects, such as mood changes, sudden laughing or crying, feeling anxious, unhappy or depressed, forgetfulness
  • visual impairments, such as involuntary eye movements or crossing of the eyes.

The degree of these difficulties varies between individuals.
