Common terms in language, as well as images in the media, may affect our attitudes to disabled people. Part of your role as tutor is to set an example of good practice.

Think about the terms below and how their use might influence the way other students in a group behave with a disabled student.

Note too that there are many people with hidden disabilities.

  • the disabled
  • suffering from epilepsy
  • a victim of deafness
  • schizophrenic
  • confined to a wheelchair
  • crippled

Insensitive language can be offensive and extremely hurtful. Consider how you might challenge this type of language if it is used by students or a colleague.
