It really does amaze me, that nobody asks the question: “Well how do you learn?” You go “Oh yes everyone learns differently”. What and we leave it at that? Oh no, no, no! Let's really find out how you learn differently. And there are some very simple kind of questionnaires out there, that you can use, which just give people a sense of what kind of a learner they are. And one of the first things I do with the first years is getting them to understand “well are you a kinaesthetic learner? Are you a visual learner? Do you like… are you someone who works in groups?” And in a sense, if I can start that learning process by going “Who am I? How can I do it best?” Then in a sense I can adapt my learning to suit my needs. So if I know, that I'm actually a visual learner, then I need to be thinking about how I can make sure, that I know that the information is presented in that way? If I'm an auditory learner, how am I going to do that? So maybe it's about me thinking, “well maybe I need to talk to my friends about, whatever delicious thing it is I'm learning at the time” because actually the process of speaking will anchor my understanding of it. So they self assess, and they go “Ooh I'm a this kind of learner, I didn't know that before, that's interesting”. I did it in the first year with Ben and I think he came out… I think he was a visual learner. And you go “OK that's great!” So what do you need to do, to make sure that you can help yourself and that the material that you have around you suits your learning style.
