Citizen science and volcanology in Central America: investigating the impact of persistently degassing volcanoes on the local environment and population

Welcome. This Society in Science funded research project combines geophysical and geochemical methods with public engagement. The aim is to advance the scientific understanding of volcanic degassing while increasing the capabilities of communities in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

The work is carried out at Turrialba (Costa Rica) and Masaya (Nicaragua), whose ongoing activity represents a health and economic threat to the local population.
