Appointments at residential schools


The tutoring pay rates at residential schools are based on a six-day working week.  The daily rate for tutors is currently £121.83.  Annual leave will be accrued at the statutory minimum rate and will be paid at the end of the residential school for external staff, associate lecturers and paid internal University staff taking leave to work at residential school.

Fees are paid pro rata if, in exceptional circumstances, you work for only part of a school.

Payment process

Employees at residential schools are paid monthly. Your rate of pay for any appointments offered will be shown on the offer letter. If you are a member of full-time University staff and are not being paid for your appointment, this will be shown as "Unpaid" on the appointment offer letter.

If you have been offered an appointment as a reserve tutor your appointment offer letter will show the current reserve retainer payment which you will receive if you are not called upon. If you are later called on to teach, you will not receive the additional retainer fee but the relevant role (tutor, etc.) fee for the number of days worked. The retainer payment is withheld should you be called on to teach and the University does not receive a reply or receives an unfavourable reply.

Payment is made direct to your bank/building society and you must use the Staff Engagement Form to give us your bank/building society details and your National Insurance number.  Employees should note that the University will be unable to commence payments until a properly completed Staff Engagement Form has been received.  We cannot make payment by cash or cheque.

If you are exempt from paying Class 1 contributions or pay contributions at the reduced rate, you must send the appropriate certificate, issued by the Contributions Agency, to the Open University.
