On this day in 1969 - Apollo 11 lands on the Moon

[[[image-0 medium right]]] On this day in 1969, the American astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on the moon, and the words spoken by Armstrong as he first stepped onto the moon are some of the most famous of the 20th century:
“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

The Apollo 11 moon landings inspired the world. During his speech at the Charter ceremony for the new University (held on July 23rd 1969) the Open University’s first Chancellor Geoffrey Crowther remarked that:
“The limits, not only of explorable space, but of human understanding, are infinitely wider than we have believed.”
(The recording and transcript of this speech are available on the OU Digital Archive)

You can view footage captured by the astronauts as they explore the lunar surface and plant the American Flag, and as they receive an important telephone call, through the Alexander Street digital collections.
