Moving your references out of RefWorks

Please note: Each reference management tool has slightly different features which can cause changes in the reference format during import. Some of the data from your RefWorks Library may not appear in the new tool particularly if you have used the notes field or date accessed fields. We strongly recommend keeping a copy of your RefWorks library in Refworks tagged format. You can then refer to this file to check for any missing data.

Exporting your references

The following activities provide guidance in exporting [[[image-0 medium right]]] your references from RefWorks and MyReferences, as well as how to import them to EndNote Web, Mendeley and Zotero, three of the freely available reference management tools. Note that there may be problems exporting ris files with Windows 8.

Short video demonstrations

The following screencasts on YouTube have been made by Canadian universities to demonstrate moving content out of Refworks into other tools. Although there are a few differences in the layout the procedure is broadly similar. We have found that exporting in RefWorks tagged format also works well in Endnote Web and Zotero.
