Six reasons to study at The Open University

The Open University in Northern Ireland

If you are receiving your exam results today and are thinking about your next step then why not consider The Open University (OU)? We offer a route into higher education for anyone with a desire to learn. There are no entry requirements to study with the OU for the majority of our courses and we help you to achieve the qualifications you deserve.

We can give you six reasons to start thinking about studying with the OU.

People love studying with The Open University. In Northern Ireland, we have been voted the top-rated university by our students for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey for 13 years running. With over 3,600 students in Northern Ireland, that means our students are happy with Open University study.

We have a dedicated team of people who are there to support our students over the phone or face-to-face in our Belfast office. The OU is a leading expert in flexible higher education; no-one understands how adults learn better than us. We help those who can succeed to succeed every step of the way.   You are never on your own with the OU.  You will learn from your tutor, with students in your tutor group and the wider student community.

Our unique flexible methods mean you don’t have to put your life on hold to get qualifications. Depending on your own commitments, students can take as little as three years or take longer if needed. With 74% of our students fitting their studies around a job you have the opportunity to study while you earn. You can study at home, in the workplace or on the move – our course materials can be accessed through apps and mobile devices.

OU study can be an investment in a better future and more affordable way to study. Nearly half of Northern Ireland students receive financial support towards their fees. The fee for a typical 30-credit module is £479, and for a typical 60-credit module it's £958. Our experienced team can advise on the financial support options specifically available to you particularly the new part-time and postgraduate loans scheme available.

An OU qualification helps progress your employability and increase your earning potential – many of our modules and qualifications are accredited by leading professional bodies and developed to industry standards. Nearly three quarters of our students here are already in work while they study – developing their skills and knowledge to apply them to their jobs, or to develop their careers.

We combine our teaching with research excellence. We rank in the top third of universities in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, with 72% of our research deemed world-leading or internationally excellent. OU space scientists play key roles in iconic missions, such as Rosetta, the first landing on a comet. Using cutting-edge technology, they are unlocking the secrets of the universe and are helping to overcome practical challenges here on Earth.
