Social Work programme

Amanda Davison Social WorkThe Open University works in partnership with a range of statutory and voluntary organisations in Northern Ireland to offer an Honours degree in Social Work which is the required qualification for social workers in the UK.   This programme is open only to those who are currently employed in the sector and are supported by their employer to undertake the qualification.

The Open University degree programme is the only work-based option in Northern Ireland, and it offers flexible, cost-efficient training for staff to enable them to attain a professional qualification whilst continuing in their employment.

12 students have completed the degree successfully to date, and graduated in 2013 at a ceremony in the Waterfront Hall in Belfast. A further 7 students are currently enrolled.

For further information on the Social Work degree programme, contact: Helen Evans (Senior Lecturer). The Northern Ireland Social Care Council can provide further information on training as a social worker.

Amanda’s OU studies in social work gave her a fresh lease of life as an education welfare officer.

I've got more confidence now; it's having a really positive impact on the families that I deal with.
