Meet our Creative Writing Students

Check out the recent winners of our student creatve writing competition.

David Ferran a student from Belfast

Personally I have gained a lot of confidence in myself. I’ve never studied at degree level before and was unsure if I would have the ability to complete such a course.

 David Ferran from Belfast

David recently graduated with a BSc (Honours) Adult Nursing. David wanted to become an advocate for his patients, which hasn’t gone unnoticed. David won the 2016 Royal College of Nursing NI ‘Student Nurse of the Year’ award for his treatments towards his patients, treating them with dignity and respect. He has created an advice leaflet for undergoing skin biopsy so that patients can make an informed decision about their treatment and care.

Graeme Millar from Carrickfergus

I learned a lot from my fellow students. The tutorials and residential activities were a great opportunity to find out about management work in other business and sectors.

 Graeme Millar from Carrickfergus

Graeme graduated with a Master of Business Administration in 2014. Graeme is an Operations Manager for the Echlinville Distillery which is Northern Ireland’s first licensed distillery in over 125 years. He is a partner and a dad, a guitarist in a band and the Chairman of a Motocross Club so it’s inspiring how he managed to also fit in studying for an MBA!

Karenanne Coughaln-Pierse from Derry

I had given up my career to be at home with my children but studying with the OU kept me in contact with the adult and academic world. I was challenged, but found every module worthwhile and enjoyable. I think it showed me that I can do anything that I put my mind to.

 Karenanne Coughlan-Pierse from Derry

Karenanne graduated with a BA (Hons) in Modern Language Studies in 2016. In 2003 Karenanne decided to leave work and stay at home to look after her three children. After 11 years of not working, she was offered, out of the blue, the opportunity to re-enter the medical arena in a totally new area of work. Karenanne felt confident in her CV despite the fact that she hadn’t been working because she had been studying for an Open University degree.

Dawn Dawson from Belfast

Don’t put it off! You can always find a hundred reasons not to start but when you look back you won’t believe how quickly the time went and it will be the best decision you ever made.

 Dawn Dawson from Belfast

Dawn graduated with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 2016. She was encouraged to study with the OU after her husband also completed the MBA. His very positive experience made her choice to study with The Open University an easy one. Dawn is hoping her MBA will make it easier for her to change careers and possibly work in America as the OU MBA course has US accreditation.
