About COLMSCT

The Centre for Open Learning of Mathematics, Science, Computing and Technology (COLMSCT) was one of the HEFCE funded Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETLs).

The Centre set about helping excellent teachers to develop effective and engaging open learning in mathematics, science, computing and technology.  This was achieved through an open call to OU staff for project proposals.  In choosing our portfolio of fellows and projects, it was necessary to acknowledge strategy, balance diversity and exploit opportunity for synergistic collaboration. We were able to respond to predictable priorities, e.g. online teaching of subjects such as mathematics that are symbol rich, online experimentation and computer based assessment. However, we were also able to initiate major projects in unforeseen areas, e.g. offender learners, enhancement of access to field trips and learning in immersive environments. In each case, strong change champions emerged from the COLMSCT fellowship selection process. In several of the predictable arenas, COLMSCT has led major innovation, e.g. in the use of interactive computer marked assessments.
