An on-line tutorial was developed to enable students to understand and evaluate chemical formulae. This was made available to students via their first class tutor group conference. The exercise (plus the answers to the questions) was sent to their tutors. A simple questionnaire was designed which was sent to students who attempted the tutorial. The questionnaire was used to assess the usefulness of this material in helping students to understand chemical formulae.
From feedback gained, the exercise was converted into a web page that was more interactive. Further feedback from students and tutors was used to help make the exercise more user-friendly and more interactive.
