Who is in the database?

Samples were drawn from the membership of four chemical institutions and the graduates of University College London.

  • The Chemical Society (founded 1841): all individuals who were members of the Council of the society between 1875 and 1971; representative samples of individuals joining the society in 5 successive cohorts between 1875 and 1971.
  • The Institute of Chemistry (later Royal, founded 1877): all individuals who were members of the Council of the institute between 1877 and 1971; representative samples of individuals joining the institution in 5 successive cohorts between 1877 and 1971.
  • The Society of Chemical Industry (founded 1881): all individuals who were members of the Council of the institute between 1881 and 1971; representative samples of individuals joining the society in 5 successive cohorts between 1881 and 1971.
  • The Institution of Chemical Engineers (founded 1922): all individuals who were members of the Council of the institute between 1922 and 1971; representative samples of individuals joining the institution in 3 successive cohorts between 1922 and 1971.
  • The Department of Chemistry, University College London: all individuals obtaining BSc. MSc, DSc or PhD degrees in chemistry between 1881 and 1965, as well as all members of the academic staff in that period.
