With a degenerative condition in my hips, which can be quite painful, I was looking for some form of exercise that would help and that didn’t involve lycra. Belly dancing proved my saviour by combining my love of dancing with exercise. I have learned new skills, made loads of friends and have been able to overcome my natural shyness to perform in front of a live audience, on several occasions. Belly dancing is fun and exciting and is something anyone can do, irrespective of age or dress size.

I started Belly Dancing in October 2009 after seeing Mary strutting her stuff at a local event, where she asked for volunteers to join in with a few moves. I thoroughly enjoy coming to classes, which are fun but also a good work out!

I started to dance last year because I wanted to find an activity that would help me tone up and strengthen my muscles but would also
be fun (treadmills etc. just don’t do it for me) and something I could commit to. Belly dancing ticks my boxes on a physical level, but
it has also increased my confidence, an example of which was the display a few of my colleagues and I put on for Red Nose Day to a very
select (i.e. small :-)) audience
