Scotland leads the way as they blaze the futures trail
If you have spent much time on OUSA's internet forums you may have come across references to OUSA Futures. OUSA Futures is a major reorganisation of OUSA and the way it goes about representing student opinion. Although there is still much work to be done and the process is not yet finished, OUSA within Scotland has been trialing the new proposals which we hope will be agreed by the membership next spring. It is anticipated that other regions and nations may follow suit and trial their own proposals, which the Executive Committee would strongly welcome. In fact, OUSA in Wales are now to begin their own trial and launch their own elections for the Wales Assembly and Executive.
OUSA in the West Midlands Assembly
With a student population of over 20,000 in the O U in the West Midlands Region, the Assembly can have up to 39 elected members, from all areas, all faculties or interest groups in the region. While the Assembly will effectively be open house, with all of its meetings open online to all students in the region, only the elected members would be eligible to take part in any voting that may arise out of its discussions.
All currently registered O U students in the West Midlands (Coventry & Leamington, Stoke on Trent, Kidderminster, Hereford, Rugby, Solihull) will be entitled to stand for direct election to the Assembly.
OUSA in West Midlands Executive
In addition to the Assembly Representatives there will also be 6 positions available for Assembly Executive Members. These six students will take the responsibility for the day to day running of the Assembly, so that the level of commitment for these posts will be a bit higher, much the same as for Officer and named posts on the current West Midlands Forum. The election for the six Regional Assembly Executive places will follow the same programme as that for the Assembly members.
The nomination procedure is the same as for Assembly members, however candidates for the six Executive posts are required to provide an election address up to a maximum of 300 words. When elected, the Executive Members will determine between themselves what role each of them will take, there will be a need for roles such as Chair, Secretary, Finance Officer or Treasurer and a Communications Officer to take responsibility for the preparation of future newsletters and information dissemination to students. Also if an Assembly Executive Member has the necessary skills a Webmaster.
In line with OUSA policy, all representative students are unpaid volunteers, but travel expenses (and approved essential accommodation costs) are reimbursed for attending face to face meetings. The Inaugural Face to Face Meeting of the new Assembly will be arranged by the incoming team and further information will follow in due course.
