Scottish elections - The trail

Picture of student addressing ConferenceThe May Executive Committee gave a ringing endorsement to OUSA Scotland's plans for trialling the new forms of local and national organisation, when it backed the detailed application from the Scotland Forum. Now OUSA in Scotland is issuing a clarion call throughout the glens inviting OU students to inaugurate the first ever 'OUSA Scotland Assembly'.

Scottish proposals

The new OUSA in Scotland Assembly will facilitate the representation of O U students at a region/nation level within Scotland, within both the O U and the wider higher education sector. In addition it will also have responsibility for providing an OUSA presence at O U events and supporting local OUSA groups. The Assembly will consist of nearly 40 elected volunteer student representatives from throughout Scotland and across all O U faculties. For the first time, all O U students within Scotland will have the opportunity to vote in the elections of your student reps, and to stand for election to this Scotland wide body of OUSA. This is an exciting time for OUSA within Scotland and we want you to be a part of it.

The intention is to trial the new Assembly from August 2010 until the decisions of Conference 2011 require it to change. Student representatives will be able to participate in at least 3 meetings during that time. Participation may be at a face to face Saturday afternoon meeting (various venues) or may be remotely via online means, whichever suits. It would also be helpful if representatives were able to spend a bit of time in between meetings taking part in online discussions by means of internet forums.

In addition to the Assembly Representatives there will also be 6 positions available for Assembly Executive Members. These students will be expected to take responsibility for the day to day running of the affairs of the Assembly and the level of commitment will thus be a bit higher. In line with OUSA policy, all representatives are unpaid volunteer students, although travel expenses (and essential accommodation) are paid for when attending meetings and other events.

An Inaugural Face to Face Meeting was held on 21st August 2010 in Edinburgh.

Elections to the Scottish Assembly and the Scottish Executive

OUSA is changing the way it runs its elections in the regions and nations. Elections will increasingly now be conducted by an electronic ballot and voters will be able to cast their votes online. However, alternative methods will be available on request to students, who require alternative formats.

Please note: The Scottish elections to the Scottish Assembly and elections to the Scottish Executive are now closed.
