With a student population of over 28,000 in the O U in the South Region, the Assembly can have up to 56 elected members, from all areas, all faculties or interest groups in the region. More effective than the Branch and South Forum system we have at the moment. While the Assembly will effectively be open house, with all of its meetings open online to all students in the region, only the elected members would be eligible to take part in any voting that may arise out of its discussions.
All currently registered O U students in the South of England (Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, The Isle of Wight, Dorset, part of Wiltshire including Salisbury and also The Channel Islands) will be entitled to stand for direct election to the Assembly.
In addition to the Assembly Representatives there will also be 8 positions available for Assembly Executive Members. These eight students will take the responsibility for the day to day running of the Assembly, so that the level of commitment for these posts will be a bit higher, much the same as for Officer and named posts on the current South Forum. The election for the eight Regional Assembly Executive places will follow the same programme as that for the Assembly members.
The nomination procedure is basically the same as for Assembly members, however candidates for the eight Executive posts are required to provide an election address up to a maximum of 300 words and to provide the names of two supporting, currently registered, O U students from the region. These similarly must be currently registered O U students or have very recently completed an O U course. When elected, the Executive Members will determine between themselves what role each of them will take, there will be a need for roles such as Chair, Secretary, Finance Officer or Treasurer and a Communications Officer to take responsibility for the preparation of future newsletters and information dissemination to students. Also if an Assembly Executive Member has the necessary skills a Webmaster.
In line with OUSA policy, all representative students are unpaid volunteers, but travel expenses (and approved essential accommodation costs) are reimbursed for attending face to face meetings. The Inaugural Face to Face Meeting of the new Assembly is scheduled to take place on Saturday 15th January 2011(venue and time to be confirmed. Please check our FirstClass OUSA South Forum for further information) there will be an associated on-line component from the 8th to 22nd January 2011.
Please note the South elections have been held successfully and results have been announced.
