Using a wiki

A wiki is a tool for creating and editing documents, used by a group of people working online asynchronously (at different times). It consists of one or more web pages. Each wiki user can add, edit and delete content, and a historical record is kept of all these changes.

A wiki may be included as part of your course. Wikis are good for collaborative authoring, such as when developing a document, creating an encyclopaedia (such as Wikipedia), producing a specification or drawing up a report.

As a student it is important for you to participate in the wiki activity and, above all, to remember that the wiki is a collective resource.  Be willing to

  • add your writing
  • have other people alter what you write
  • edit other contributions
  • stick to the subject.

If you'd like to know more about how wikis work, watch a Common Craft movie about wikis.
