OU computer use

OU courses use computers for a variety of different reasons, for example

  • to let you explore ideas and concepts in more depth, such as by using a multimedia CD-ROM or DVD with interactive exercises
  • to help you communicate with others on your course. Online forums offer a way to contact other students and members of the course team for information, discussion and mutual support. Many courses have special forums, others have a course forum hosted by the OU Students Association, and there are also general interest forums
  • so that you can analyse data, see pictures or diagrams, hear experts talking, or solve problems
  • as a means of learning about your subject in a different way, such as by creating web pages to learn about computing.

You can also use a computer to contact the OU, to book a course or residential school online, collect your assignment and exam results, or to write notes and assessments using word processing.

Download the ebook Using a computer to support your study (PDF, 705KB) to find out about the skills you will need to study with a computer.
