Professional biography

I started my PhD under Konstantin Stefanov and Andrew Holland in 2015 during which I am performing performing simulation and experimental work on an Electron Multiplying CCD prototype device for use in astronomical imaging.

Prior to joining the Centre for Electronic Imaging (CEI) at The Open University I completed my undergraduate degree in physics in 2015 from Loughborough University.

Research interests

My PhD largely focusses on the testing of an Electron Multiplying Charge Coupled Device (EMCCD) in a CMOS process. This device is the first of its kind to be designed at The Open University containing two newly patented gate designs that aim to greatly improve EM gain. The project will consist of detailed electro-optical device characterisation using industry-standard test methods and equipment.

The research aims to understand if the EM process can be successfully implemented within a CMOS structure, when traditionally only implemented in CCDs. If successful CMOS devices which traditionally require a much lower power consumption and have a higher radiation tolerance than CCDs can utilise EM technology. As such they can then be implemented in low light imaging, making ideal candidates for astronomical imaging.
