Professional biography

Dr Angela L. Coe, Senior Lecturer in Earth sciences

I'm a sedimentologist and stratigrapher with a particular interest in understanding palaeoclimate change, detecting past changes in sea-level and refining the geological timescale. I am based at the main Open University campus in Milton Keynes.

Current postions and service within the scientific community

  • Member of the Stratigraphy Commission, London
  • Secretary of the International Subcommission on Jurassic Stratigraphy
  • Member of the Joint Commission for Palaeontology
  • Member of the NERC Peer Review College
  • External examiner for University College, Cork

Research interests

My research  focuses on sea-level change, the development and application of sequence stratigraphy and palaeoclimate change including de-oxygenation of the oceans. I currently have research projects on the consequence of global warming during the Toarcian and Paleocene I also contribute towards the development of new proxies for environmental change and the Jurassic geological timescale. I currently have research projects on:

  • The impact of global warming during the Toarcian oceanic anoxic event
  • Geochemical proxies for de-oxygenation
  • The causes and consequences of global cooling during the mid-Miocene
  • Oxfordian stratigraphy and cycles
  • Jurassic of Morocco
  • Massflow deposits in NE Scotland
  • Flora response to palaeoenvironmental change

For more information see the website of our palaeoenvironmental change research team.

I oversee the running of a suite of laboratories for the preparation of sedimentary deposits for sedimentological, palaeontological and stable isotopic analyses.

Postgraduate and postdoctoral opportunities

I have a team of postgraduate students, and I advertise new PhD projects each year. I also work with several postdoctoral fellows. Please do get in touch if you are interested in working with me as either a PhD student or a postdoctoral fellow.

Teaching interests

I teach a broad range of Earth Science disciplines including: sedimentology, stratigraphy, palaeoclimatology, palaeontology, field skills, earth system science, basin analysis, geophysics and general geology. I have contributed towards pedagogy, science communication, project work and led teams on 5 courses.

Current and recent undergraduate modules

S309 Earth processes. Module team chair and core author of the stage 3, 60 pt course on Earth processes. This course has developed and tested a brand new way of producing and presenting online modules at the Open University (2015-). The module will be presented for the first time in October 2016.

SXG288 Practical Science: Earth and Environment. Member of the core team that set up the module, module team chair (2009-2014), topic team leader and author for Sedimentary Rocks and Fossils in the field as well as contributing to the topic Igneous and Metamorphic Rocks in the Field.

S209 Earth Science, author of material on sedimentology, sedimentary environments, home and field based project work, residential field work. Also lead work on the learning outcomes and assessment strategy.  (2014- )

S276 Geology, author (2009-2014)

All of these modules contribute towards the BSc in Natural Sciences and are included in the Earth Science pathway.
