Professional biography

Carey joined The Open University Business School in 2002, firstly working on the Certificate/Diploma in Management Programme before moving on to both the Law and Business Undergraduate programmes as Regional Manager. Carey is currently a Lecturer in Management Development in Executive Education, working mainly with Public Sector organisations on the design, delivery and management of professional development programmes for employees and was recently part of the team that delivered the OU’s largest corporate project in partnership with the NHS Leadership Academy and Hay Group. Carey is also a module Chair and a tutor.

Until 2000 Carey was part of a qualification development team in Local Government, working with Local Authorities and set up a clearing house for Educational Psychologists as well as managing a £4 million grants scheme for trainees into the Profession in 1996. Until the housing market crash in 1989 Carey was a Conveyancer. A believer in lifelong learning, Carey achieved an OU MBA in 2003 and a BSC (Hons) in Criminology & Psychology in 2010.

Research interests

Carey’s published research has included the co-writing of a Book chapter - Engaging Large Groups of Individual Learners through an Online Environment: An Emerging i-Learner Generation? C. Innovative Business School Teaching: Engaging the Millennial Generation – published by Routledge in 2013 and co-writing Signals from the Silent: online Predictors of non-success. Business and Management Education in HE: An International Journal also published in 2013. 

In 2012 Carey co-delivered a presentation on ‘Can timely interventions, incorporating innovative technology, improve student retention & success in a blended learning environment’? at the Association of Business Schools Conference in Manchester and ‘LOST IN (SOCIAL) SPACE? Testing the transition to learning online’, International Higher Education Teaching and Learning Association (HETL) annual conference in 2013.
