Professional biography

I studied at the University of Glasgow, later undertaking post graduate research at the University of Strathclyde. I was a research fellow at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, before moving to Napier University, Edinburgh. I then joined The Open University as Staff Tutor in History, based in Edinburgh and spent much of my career (with various interludes in Australia and the US) at the OU, retiring as Emeritus Professor in History.

Research interests

My research initially focused on economic history including industrialization (my doctorate was on the history of the brewing industry!), and regional studies. While working in Australia I investigated  Scottish-Australian connexions including studies of crime, convict transportation, social and economic migration and the role of Scots in Australian development.

I subsequently concentrated on social history and biography, notably of Robert Owen, the social reformer. My current research is on Owen’s links to Enlightened European and American thinkers and  reactions to his agenda for social regeneration in the 1800s.

I served on university committees, concentrating on research and research funding, and was also a member of University Council. At the same time I supervised numerous research students, including eleven doctoral candidates in social or economic history.

Teaching interests

I contributed to many courses, including the inter-disciplinary course From Enlightenment to Romanticism c. 1780-1830, on World Heritage for Understanding Global Heritage, and chaired the Taught MA in History, which covers British and Irish local and regional histories. I was co-director of a joint Dundee-OU programme funded by the Scottish Funding Council which produced two courses on Scottish history since studied by many OU undergraduates. As Hon. Lecturer in History at Dundee, I currently tutor Modern Scottish History, 1707 to Present. I was Academic Advisor for the BBC-OU History of Scotland series, which attracted large audiences nationally and internationally, generating further interest both in the courses and the OU more generally.

External collaborations

I taught at Deakin University, Vic. and was a visiting research fellow in the University of Sydney, NSW, Australia. I am a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.

I chaired Validation Panels for OU Validation Services, the Centre for Inclusion and Collaborative Partnerships, and acted as an assessor with QAA, the Scottish Funding Council, and reviewer for the Arts and Humanities Research Council. I do reviewing for Reviews in History, Institute of Historical Research, and various academic journals. I’ve a long-term interest in heritage, documenting and promoting the New Lanark World Heritage Site.

In promoting research, I previously chaired a major archive trust at the University of Glasgow and was recently involved in the development of a search room and archive at New Lanark.
