Research interests

My research is based around three themes and their intersections through a focus on culture, ethnicity, race and racism.

  • Race, racism, migration and diaspora, especially identities, culture and belonging
  • Sociology and its engagements with publics and public policy
  • Policing, diversity and race.

I am a member of the Open University's Centre for Citizenship, Identities and Governance (CCIG) and the International Centre for Comparative Criminological Research (ICCCR)..

Teaching interests

I have written chapters and VLE materials for courses in Sociology, Social Policy, Politics, Geography and Research Methods. I am the Module Team Chair of DD103 Investigating the Social World.

Student supervision

I co-supervise several PhD students working on themes concerning migration, racism and cultural change. 

I welcome enquiries from prospective students in the areas covered by my research interests.

Impact and engagement

Among many public policy previous roles, I have served on advisory and steering groups at the UK Drug Policy Commission, the Joseph Rowntree Trust and the Home Office; and on the board of the Metanoia Institute and a local Safeguarding Children Board.  I have held public appointments with the General Teaching Council, the Metropolitan Police Authority and the National Policing Improvement Agency.
