Professional biography

Lead Educator and Co-author of the Smart Cities MOOC

The  Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) explores the role technology and data in cities and teaches citizens how to co-create smart city projects. It has been developed as part of MK:Smart, a £16 million collaborative smart city initiative partly funded by a grant from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and led by The Open University, which will develop innovative solutions to support the economic growth of Milton Keynes.

I've worked for over 18 years in the sustainability sector in particular working on climate change, smart cities, sustainable cities, environmental management and LCA. I currently work part-time for the OU and also freelance on smart cities and sustainability through Hudson Sustainability Consulting. I've previously worked for Bristol City Council managing Smart City Bristol and coordinating their climate change and Green ICT work, Metroeconomia as a Senior Environmental Consultant and Unilever as an Environmental Manager.

I have a PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry (University of Bristol) and a BSc(Hons) in Environmental Sciences (Lancaster University).

Research interests

My research interests are smart cities, ICT for sustainability, living labs, co-creation, MOOCs and open education.

I work part-time on the MK:Smart project and my research is evaluating the design and delivery of the Smart Cities MOOC in particular exploring the demographics and motivations of the learners and how they are using the course. More than 14,000 people signed up for the first two presentations and it is scheduled to run for six presentations between 2015/17.

I've also worked as a Reasearch Consultant on the SmartDFrame Project which explored evaluation and reporting in UK smart cities and I'm a Visiting Fellow at the University of Bristol in Future Cities.

Teaching interests

I'm also an Associate Lecturer in Environmental Sciences - currently tutoring U116 (Environment: journeys through a changing world) and T219 (Environmental Management 1).
