Research interests

Lucy’s doctoral research used ethnographic methods and video data to explore 3-4-year-old’s experiences of literacy in their play and everyday lives. Drawing on cultural historical theories, the conceptual framework developed in the study offers a new lens to view children’s early encounters with written text, foregrounding children’s agency and promoting broader understandings of literacy. Additionally, her research critically reviewed adult – child shared book reading, exploring how different social contexts influence children’s participation and interpretation of the narrative.

Teaching interests

Lucy’s teaching interests span many aspects of early childhood education and care. She is currently a module team member on E109, ‘Perspectives on Young Children's Lives and Learning’. She previously worked on the production of E229, ‘Listening to Young Children Living and Learning: Critical Reflections’ and is currently working on a new module, E305.
