Dr Maria Aristeidou PhD, SFHEA, MSc, BA (Hons)

Senior Lecturer in Technology Enhanced Learning

About

I am a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Technology Enhanced Learning at The Open University (OU) and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). My work focuses on designing and evaluating engaging learning technologies and improving diverse student bodies' learning experiences and outcomes. I am a mixed-methods researcher with expertise in Education, Human-Computer Interaction and Citizen Science.

I am a member of the editorial board of the 'Citizen Science: Theory and Practice' journal and chairing the European Citizen Science Association's Citizen Science and Universities working group. I co-edited the 'Citizen Science in Higher Education' special issue. I am presently serving on the organising committee for the ECSA 2024 conference, and co-editing the special issue titled 'Engaging Young People in Authentic Research' for the International Journal of Science Education, Part B.

Teaching

I am the Academic Conduct Officer for the Institute of Educational Technology (IET) curriculum and am directly involved in developing academic conduct policy and practice across the university.

I contributed to authoring the MA in Online Teaching courses H880: Technology-enhanced learning: foundations and futures and HZFM889: Teacher Development: Addressing the Climate Emergency. I will be charing the latter from October 2024.Previously, I was in the module team for the MA in Childhood and Youth courses E808: Children and young people's worlds and E809: Frameworks for critical practice with children and young people, and the MA in Online and Distance Learning courses H800: Technology-enhanced learning: practices and debates and H819: The critical researcher: educational technology in practice. I also tutored on EK313: Issues in research with children and young people.

Doctoral support

I supervise one EdD student (Helen Darlaston) and one PhD student (Sarah Alcock). I was the external examiner for Robert Sims' PhD thesis, 'Breaking virtual barriers: Investigating virtual reality for enhanced educational engagement' (University of Lancaster).I recently co-authored the OpenLearn guide Writing your Research Proposal, which is a general guide for prospective PhD and EdD students. In the past (2020-2023), I was tutoring on the following seminars for the Professional Doctorate programme (for EdD and DHSC students): 'Connecting research and practice' (Year 3) and 'Getting ready for your viva' (Year 4).

Scholarship work

As a Quality Enhancement and Innovation (QEI) team member in IET, I contribute to pan-university and cross-faculty scholarship projects. Insights from these projects help the OU take useful actions to support students' learning experiences and outcomes better.I am currently leading a tutor consultation, commissioned by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Students, on how to support students' early learning journey, focusing on students who struggle.

In the past, I led the 'online exams' scholarship project, exploring OU students’ views on the nuances and variants of online exams; I explored the motivations and experiences of OU's younger students (18-19-year-olds); I explored the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the learning activities of the OU undergraduate students; I evaluated the use of Virtual Microscope by OU students and tutors; and I evaluated the benefits and challenges of producing and presenting OU courses of high quality (i.e. H880, BXM840, BXM850 & D890) on the FutureLearn platform, for students and staff.

Internally funded work

I'm currently the co-I of the internally-funded Open Societal Challenge 'Pelagios: Linking online resources through the places they mention', which aims to enhance citizen engagement and learning opportunities by providing a visual and spatial dimension to historical and cultural information. In the past, I held internal funding for several projects: (a) as a PI to study the OU students' views about assessment, delivery, invigilation and quality assurance in online exams with the OU's Assessment Programme (pan-university scholarship funding); (b) as a PI to study the impact of Covid-19 on the research progress and well-being of PhD students worldwide in collaboration with the UCL School of Management (coronavirus research fund); and (c) as a PI to study the impact of Covid-19 on the learning, assessment and social activities of undergraduate OU students (coronavirus research fund).

Externally funded work

I have been actively engaged in several research initiatives over the years. I am currently leading the evaluation of the National Enrichment Programme. This HEFCW-funded pan-Wales enrichment programme employs open educational resources to enrich the studies of FE learners and support them in developing transferrable skills that employers and HE providers look for. I am also involved in the Horizon Europe project Every1 (2022-2026), which is dedicated to promoting widespread engagement in the energy transition.

Recently, I was the UK principal investigator for the Erasmus+ VISITOR project (2021-2023). This project focused on developing tools for virtual visits to museums for schools and providing professional development resources for teachers. In the past, I received Santander funding, allowing me to explore and enhance educators' experiences in engaging young people in citizen science activities (CitSci Edu), which was successfully completed in 2021. In 2019, I obtained funding from the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) to collaborate with the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education on developing a methodology (settings, instructions, modes, time frame, evaluation) for diary studies in citizen science, capturing citizen engagement (CitSci Diaries). In my commitment to advancing citizen science, I contributed to the LEARN CitSci project, which ran from 2017 to 2022. This project, funded by the National Science Foundation, Welcome and ESRC, aimed to enhance the design of online citizen science platforms like Zooniverse and iNaturalist, with a focus on engaging younger citizen science volunteers. Additionally, I played a significant role in the development of nQuire, a platform supporting large-scale public psychology and social science experiments, in collaboration with the BBC.
