Professional biography

Paul Lawrence is Professor of History, and Director of the International Centre for the History of Crime, Policing and Justice,. He has worked at the Open University since receiving his doctorate in 1998 from Royal Holloway College, London University (for a thesis entitled 'Immigration, National Identity and Public Opinion in France, 1919-1939').

Research interests

All aspects of criminal justice history, c.1750-present;  the historiography of nationalism; the social history of poverty and welfare; memoirs and autobiographies as historical sources.

Current research projects include a broad history of the Vagrancy Act (1824) and its manifold impacts on English society, a history of the development and impact of Photofit as a technology of police identification, and a theoretical piece analysing the genesis and trajectory of historical criminology.

I am currently supervising two Ph.D. students, as below, but Ph.D. applications on any of the above topics are welcome. For informal advice, please contact me as detailed above..

Teaching interests

I am currently Deputy Chair for a new second level history course in production - A225 The British Isles and the Modern World, 1789-1914, which will introduce students to the development of Britain and Ireland over the long nineteenth century, foregrounds interconnections with the wider world.  He was production co-chair of A326 Empires, 1492-1975, which focussed on the  comparative history of empires over the longue durée, and has written teaching Units for A200 Exploring History: Medieval to Modern, 1400-1900, for A824 Social Problems, Social Thought, Social Action, for A825 MA History and for W100 Rules, Rights and Justice. An Introduction to Law.

External collaborations

The Open University is a member of CHASE (The Consortium for Humanities and the Arts, South-East England), an AHRC-funded Doctoral Training Partnership. I serve as our Academic Lead on the CHASE Management Board and as Chair of the CHASE Training and Development Group. I am a member of the editorial board of the bi-lingual journal Crime, History and Societies/Crime, Histoire et Societes.
