Professional biography

I have joined OU in 2016 as a PhD student in International Development. I am having an academic background in Housing Planning (CEPT University, India, 2011) and Geography (Calcutta University, India, 2009). Before joining OU I worked as Assistant Professor in Department of Planning at School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal (2016) and School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada (2013-15). I have also worked as a Project Assistant at CEPT University (2013) and prepared heritage based city development plans. Nearly one year (2011-2012) I was associated with a non-profit organisation, Development Alternatives, as a policy researcher. There I was involved in projects related to decentralised planning, participatory energy planning and affordable housing.

Research interests

My research interest includes critical urban theory, spatial politics and political economy of cities. My current PhD work investigates innovative practices for exercising spatial rights in the context of postcolonial city Kolkata, India. By doing so, it also attempts to identify how these spatial practices create a transformative political space to unsettle hegemonic relations with the state. Theoretically, I draw from Henri Lefebvre, Jennifer Robinson, Ananya Roy and Giorgio Agamben's work. Methodologically I rely on critical ethnographic methods. I also have a particular research interest in urban photography as a research method.

PhD Supervisors: Prof. Theo Papaioannou; Prof. Parvati Raghuram (Geography), Dr. Philipp Horn (University of Sheffield)

Earlier I taught courses on Development Planning and Management, Urban Economics and Sociology, City and Metropolitan Planning.
