Aims and Activities

The Physics Innovations CETL will provide a national and international nexus for the creation, implementation, evaluation, scholarly documentation and dissemination of important new ideas in the teaching and learning of physics and astronomy. The Centre's aims are:

  • To provide a national and international centre for the creation, documentation and dissemination of important new ideas in the teaching of physics and astronomy.
  • To promote a reflective attitude to physics teaching based on pedagogic research and the evaluation of innovative learning developments.
  • To have a direct and significant impact on the learning experience of a substantial number of physics students, within the partnership and beyond.

By its example, the Centre will show how the sharing of resources and expertise can allow physics departments to improve the teaching and learning of their own students, to help others to do likewise, to derive maximum benefit from laboratory and ICT facilities, and to reach out to new groups of students in novel and exciting ways. Student benefits arising from the work of the Centre will include a rich programme of e-learning, a strong element of problem-based learning, and a substantial improvement in problem-solving and employability skills.

Each of the partner institutions is undertaking its own project work. The separate strands of work are complimentary and over time an increased level of collaboration will develop making use of the project outcomes.

Highlighted activities and projects

PIRATE: the Physics Innovations Robotic Astronomical Telescope

PIRATE is a 14 inch robotic telescope for use in astrophysics teaching, both in the distance learning context and in traditional lab courses.

E-Learning of Physical Science through Sport (ELPSS)

This project is funded by the HEA Academy under the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme project strand. Commencing in August 2007 and running to July 2010, the project will receive £200k funding to deliver engaging reusable e-learning resources in the fields of Physics, Chemistry and Materials Science.

Use of Tablet PCs by tutors to mark physics assignments

Tutors for five physics course have been equipped with Tablet PCs and appropriate software to enable them to mark electronically-submitted assignments.
