The Virtual Laboratory
The University of Reading's main contribution to the centre lies in the development of the Virtual Laboratory that aims to augment the teaching and learning functions of a conventional physics hands-on laboratory by offering new opportunities to the students in which they may carry out and experience experiments remotely via a PC.
Four types of experiments are being developed for the virtual laboratory:
- Remote controlled experiments
- Interactive screen experiments
- Experimental simulations
- Videos of experiments
In addition to the virtual laboratory physical development has taken place at Reading. The creation of an advanced development laboratory will facilitate the production of experiments for the virtual laboratory using equipment that could not be housed in the existing undergraduate laboratories on grounds of complexity, cost and safety - opening access to more advanced experiments for undergraduates at Reading and beyond.
