Dr Robert Lambourne, Centre Director and OU Principal

Dr Robert Lambourne

Dr Robert Lambourne is Director of the Physics Innovation CETL. A former head of the OU's Department of Physics and Astronomy, he is currently the Chair of the Higher Education Group of the Institute of Physics, and a recipient of the Institute's Bragg Medal for his contributions to physics Education. He has a strong interest in the public understanding of science, particularly in the fields of astronomy and particle physics; in addition to presenting public lectures on topics ranging from the big bang to quantum physics, he is a member of the programme advisory committee for the Edinburgh International Science Festival, and the organiser of the public programmes in physical science offered by Oxford University's Department for Continuing Education. He has written many teaching texts for the Open University, but is also the co-author of two popular works; Close Encounters?, a study of the science in science fiction, and Images of the Cosmos, a richly illustrated colour guide to the cosmos. As secretary to the Physics Education Division of the European Physical Society he plays an active role in physics education across Europe, and is much in demand as a conference speaker and organizer.

Kevin Mayles, Centre Manager

The Centre Manager is responsible for managing the financial and administrative co-ordination of the Centre. The Manager works closely with the project teams and the Centre Director and supports the research, write-up and dissemination of the project findings.

Kevin Mayles came to the Centre in November 2005 from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales where he was Head of Learning Systems. Kevin has a background in e-learning and e-assessment project management and holds the OU's MA in Open and Distance Education.

Diane Ford, Centre Assistant

Diane provides a full range of organisational, secretarial and clerical support for the work of the Centre, and for the Centre Director, Manager and academics working on projects within the Centre.

Dr Rob Lucas, Educational Software Programmer

Rob Lucas works with the University's academic colleagues and media specialists such as graphic designers and editors, to design and develop computer-based applications in physics and astronomy. Rob has a doctorate in Computer Science (Logic applied to databases) and a Masters in Astronomy. He has been involved in Education as a lecturer and author of books and software used in schools and universities for twenty-five years.
