Hiya folks,

I've just recently signed up for the Start Writing Fiction course in Oct 2011. Thought I'd see who else is starting next month and get to know everyone before the hard work starts! I'm 21, working in a library, and I've been at a couple of local writing groups before but had to stop when my work pattern made it difficult. I'm hoping we can get a good group on this, so feel free to add me on facebook if you like. =)

Just looking forward to the course materials now!

Rosie

 Hi Rosie,

Just signed up for this course too and can't wait! I've never written anything before (well not since I left school) but have always wanted to and hope this course helps to set me up and give me some pointers. I'm 28, live in London and am a manager for a clothing shop but want out!! Would also like others to work with and share ideas and struggles with.

Look forward to working with you!

Neil

Hi Rosie and Neil, I'm also hoping to start this course in October -see you then.

Had a bit of trouble navigating to the course in the beginning, but I think I've got the hang of it now.

Have either of you done any previous courses?

Have you written short stories or novels previously?

I belong to two writing circles that keep me on my toes. We also have a lot of fun reading other peoples' work and commenting on it.

Nope, never done this before in my life.  Also have trouble finding my way around the site, especially back to this bit. Also didn't realise how many people were on this course! Looks good though and am looking forward to it, am already writting down lots of ideas for later!

Hi Neil and Joy,

I find this site really hard to navigate; I end up signing in, then going to Platform and signing in all over again. Glad it's not just me!

I haven't done any OU courses before, but I did a very short informal writing class at my local college (exercises like halloween stories, pictures from a magazine and we had to write a story, a different take on a fairytale etc). I'd have loved to carry on there because everyone was used to my tendency for writing dark supernatural or mild horror stories, but financial costs meant I couldn't do the next course they offered!

I'm not very good at sitting down and writing of my own accord, even if I have ideas, but I really enjoy a class situation where I have deadlines and things to force me to stop bashing my own writing for a bit and just get something out.

Do either of you have a genre you'd prefer to write? Are you doing anything special to prepare for the course (so I know if I'm being lazy by not!)?

Sorry you're find it confusing to log in Rosie, we're working on making this simpler but if you have any questions, just shout.

Best of luck with the writing - and feel free to share some examples with us

Cheerio for now, Robyn

Hi.  I've signed up for the October start.  Can't wait.  Read a few books during last Octobers "write a novel" month at the library but kind of run out of steam.  Really hoping this new course will give me the kick start I need to really get my novel going.

Rosie O'Hagan - Thu, 06/10/2011 - 12:23

Hey Stephen!

Looking forward to working with you. Wow, already writing a novel! Have you ever tried the NaNoWriMo challenge to write 50,000 words in a month? I've heard of it but I don't think it's really for me. Got to admire those who try it though!

Hello everyone!

I signed up for this course some time back and am very eager to get started. But I haven't heard anything from OU recently - I just came in to check when the actual start was again, but cannot seem to find it... I hope to receive my material soon, I'm based on a BFPO address, so perhaps it's a bit slow because of that.

Look forward to having the contact on here

Rosie O'Hagan - Tue, 11/10/2011 - 00:34

Hiya Kjersti! =) Isn't the start date something like the 29th Oct, with the module site opening on the 17th? Or so I thought anyway! Looking forward to starting with you all.

Oh, I'm jealous Neil! No course materials for me yet, but they might come today while I'm at work I suppose. I'm excited now!

Rosie

EDIT: My course materials did arrive today! Looks comprehensive, and a wee bit intimidating, but looking forward to it. =)

Thanks Rosie, I did find the date eventually! I'm really excited too, but still no course material...
