Hello! Anyone else starting this module in October? I am and I'm quite excited about it - ready to give the old degree another shot after dropping out of regular Uni. Twice.
I'm Kirstie, I'm (nearly) 24 and I sit at a desk and process prescriptions for a living, which is what's spurred me to try and better myself. That and I heard something somewhere about 'third time's a charm' or something? Probably read it in a fortune cookie or something. I also like books and writing, which helps! I'm very excited at the prospect of learning things again; menial admin work tends to kill brain cells.
Anyway, I've introduced myself so now I'd like to know that I'll have some other chaps and lasses on the course, otherwise the tutor's going to have a very light workload. Feel free to add your similarly excited thoughts/trepidations about the course and maybe, just maybe, we can help each other along with all the learning. Or you can just say hello, if you'd rather. Don't be shy!

Hi and welcome to the OU!
Just to let you know, there's an AA100 group on Platform here (it's a bit quiet there at the mo but there are over 50 members): http://www8.open.ac.uk/platform/groups/aa100-the-arts-past-and-present and you might find the young students group helpful too: http://www8.open.ac.uk/platform/groups/young-students-18-25
Best of luck!

Hi,
I'm starting AA100 in October too, my first module at OU. I left Uni 12 years ago after doing a degree in Psychology but I've been bitten by the studying bug again and want to get a second degree just for the hell of it. I work as a computer programmer by day which I love, so this course is just for interest sake and I can't wait :-)

Hi,
I havent yet registered, but I definitely want to start this course in October. I'm currently doing the "Making Sense of the Arts" openings module which is really good - my first OU course :0)
Hi,
I am starting AA100 in October too, I'm so excited about it. I dropped out of Uni 2 years ago so this is my second attempt at a degree.
Im soooo excited about this OU degree. I really want to be a writer one day, I'm hoping this will be the start for me
Hi,
I'm starting AA100 in October too. I hope there will be others in the far-flung North doing it too.
Good luck to everyone.
Hi Peter I am in the Capital having moved from Sky this year.

After I originally left a comment I appear to have clicked on the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and from now on whenever a comment is added I receive four emails with the exact same comment. There has to be a way you can remove me from that service? Appreciate it!

Peter! I'll be studying in Newcastle, that far-flung enough north for you, or are you even further afield? Anyone else studying in this neck of the woods?
Hi,
Just thought I'd update my situation. Due to work commitments, I have to delay AA100 until February next year. A real pity, but I'm still looking forward to it and hope that I will be able to start then
Hi Everyone,
I'm starting the AA100 in October too, I'm in Scarborough, North Yorkshire at the moment how far North are you?
Good Luck
Adele
Hi lewis here, I used to live in Scarbrough but have moved north to Edinburgh, how is the weather?
Good luck with course
Lewis
Hi everyone, I'm Heather, I'm 21 and I have a 15 month old daughter. I'm starting with AA100 in October with a view to doing BA Hons History, although I'm slightly worried that I won't have enough time! I've just registered for the course and feeling really positive about it at the moment, but it'll be great to know that I've got a little community of people doing the same module that I can turn to! I've been out of education for three years and since having my daughter I feel like my brain has fallen out of my ear, so I'm hoping that I'll be able to brush up on my former skills and bag a degree in six years' time - what a slog!
Good luck to everyone, looking forward to chatting to you all when I'm tearing my hair out!
Oh and Peter - I'm in the North West
Hi,
I'm starting the course in October as well and can't wait. This is my first degree so I'm a little nervous but I'm also looking forward to dusting off my brain again. I've done two college courses before but this is my first Uni course.

Hi everyone, and hi Lewis
I am also starting the A100 module in October. I am nearly 49. I have been out of education for many years, due to health problems. I really want to get my brain working again so really looking forward to it.
Jim
Hi Jim I am sure we will work things out along the way, I did go to Uni in my 50's and got through that. As long as we all communicate via this forum and others with course issue's I am sure we can all help each another?
Lewis
Hi James and thank for the email, have you got all your books?
I am working my way through the first one, slowly does it, I am sure it will make work out in the end , I am looking forward to doing the arts on this course.
Lewis (ED)
Hi again Lewis
I have started on Dr Faustus. I started reading the text at first and could not make head or tales off it. My son then told me to watch it on some movie program he pays for. I started watching it and he came and turned it of, because he said I had to watch the old black and white version as it relates to the text more. I was told the colour version, would send me off track as it had been modernised. I was away for a couple of days when the books arrived. I had a card through my door, stating they tried to deliver but got no answer. I phoned to request another delivery date, this was around 7pm and they were kind enough to deliver it to me an hour later. To be honest, I was quite shocked at first by the weight so left it unopened untill the next morning. When I did open it, I was more shocked at the content. I am now starting to get my head around things.
Jim
Hi James,
Do you know which Dr. Faustus DVD/Film is required, is it the one with Elizabeth Taylor in?
I've read the Study companion and started Book 1, I've found it helpful to have pre-read the first assisnment as this concentrates on Cleopatra and Cezanne.
Good Luck,
You can reach me on alb472@my.open.ac.uk
Adele
Adele,
Hi, you don't actually need a DVD of Doctor Faustus to study this module, but if you do want to watch a performance, rather than watch a film interpretation you'd be much better off watching the actual play.
Stage on Screen have produced a small range of DVD theatre productions @ £20, but before you decide you can watch several scenes: here, and although people seem to be very keen on studying Faustus in great detail, bear in mind that it's not actually assessed in the instance of AA100 commencing in October.
I bought the Stage on Screen DVD before I knew this (£12 from amazon at the time but now out of stock) and have to say I've since found the OU/BBC production (AA100 Reputations CD1 & 2) to be much more insightful, especially following the text as it's read and listening to the actors/production team comments: here
As an aside, it seems to me that the assignments are heavily biased towards art/art history, which I find surprising as this module is compulsory for attaining a BA in literature...
Lee
Thank you Lee and James for useful information!
I look forward to speaking again soon or if your in the North Yorkshire area maybe face to face at a tutorial.
My email is: alb472@my.open.ac.uk
Adele
Hello Adele
Thanks for getting in contact with me and welcome to the OU. I have been advised by my son, who is at present himself at University, to watch the 1967 Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton version of Dr Faustus as he had previously done this in the past. I was also told to stay away from the more updated versions as this would send me away off track just like the Leonardo Di Caprio take on of Romeo and Juliet. I spoke with a woman briefly yesterday over the phone, with regards to this and she totally agreed. You do not have to actually purchase the actual DVD, as you can save yourself some money by going on to the website www.watchfullmovies-online.com. Again, my son saved me some money by introducing me to this site. The site is totally legal and free from any form of internet problems. It is also widely used by students at university. I thank you again for contacting me and hope this information will be of benefit to you. Looking forward to speaking with you again.
Good Luck
Jim

I am 63 yrs old and have not been in formal education since leaving school about 48yrs ago, but I love art and art history and like to learn something new every day if I can. I am sure we will all be able to help each other and look forward to working with you all.
Bernie
Hi Bernie and All - Nice to read your comments and to find out someone else feels like me about this. I am in my fifties, not studied for many years but love the Arts so I hope I will enjoy this course and being in contact with like minded peeps.
