Hello,

I am not sure if any of you have received this email as I have just received it today, but I think we can be rest assured the corrected mistakes are not going to change any prep work that we have all seemed to have been doing.

With the below email in mind, I'm guessing we all don't have to write about Dr. Faustus.

Dear AA100 Students

On Friday, you received a message explaining that we will need to send you a new Assignment Booklet for the 2011J presentation. I am sorry that the message was rather brief: we were trying to inform everyone that there was a problem with the booklet as quickly as possible. I am writing to you now with more information about how the situation has arisen and what we are doing to remedy it.

When we set the Assignment Booklet, we also write marking notes for tutors. Because AA100 is an interdisciplinary module, tutors often need to mark assignments outside their discipline. As a result, some of those notes contain quite specific information about the kinds of point we hope students will make in answer to the questions. On Friday, we were told that, due to a clerical error, a student (we do not know who) has been sent a pack of module materials containing set of marking notes. In consultation with the Head of Examinations and Assessment, we have decided that we will have to set a new Assignment Booklet. We need to do this in order to ensure fairness for all the students on the presentation and in order to maintain the integrity of our assessment.

Unfortunately, this does mean that the questions (with the exceptions of Assignment 02, 07 and the EMA questions) will be different from those in the booklet that you were sent. The new questions will be on the same chapters and will be in a similar form to those in the assignment booklet you were sent. For example, for Assignment 01 you will still be asked to comment on a piece of text about Cleopatra and to do a piece of visual analysis in relation to Cézanne.

We are working as quickly as we can to create the new Assignment Booklet. I am afraid that I cannot now tell you exactly when it will be ready, as it needs approval from a number of people, including our external examiner. We should be able to put the new Assignment Booklet on the module website before it is printed to ensure that it is available to you as quickly as possible.

I am also very sorry that this situation has arisen: I do understand that it will cause real difficulties and anxieties for some of you. We are trying to manage the situation as fairly and as quickly as we can.

Best wishes
(Above email sent to myself via OU).

If any of you in this forum haven't joined in the groups on Twitter, I did so a few weeks ago, they seem pretty good. Both all new to me.

Hope to meet and Tweet soon with like minded people and good luck!

Adele:)

Hello!!

I'm starting the AA100 in October. Anyone else in London?

Katie Meades - Sun, 18/09/2011 - 17:43

 Hello all :)

I'm starting in Febuary 2012 (as I just missed the October deadline) Don't suppose there are any other Feb people on here?? Or any other young students?

xxxx

Kara Hayden - Wed, 21/09/2011 - 15:47

Hi Katie,

Thats a shame you missed the deadline. I'm classed as a young student as i'm only 18. I decided to study with the OU instead of going away to traditional University!

Catherine Pickrell - Thu, 22/09/2011 - 19:27

Hi, I'm Cat and I am very nearly 21. Are there any other young students out there?

I did AS levels 3 years ago and haven't studied since so am a little nervous about starting in just over a weeks time! but also excited

xx

Daniel Featherstone - Wed, 28/09/2011 - 18:04

Emma Broxton - Sun, 25/09/2011 - 16:29

Has anyone been assigned their tutors yet?

I'm getting a bit worried as I still haven't had mine.

Emma.

Kerry Smith - Sun, 25/09/2011 - 22:35

Hi Katie,

I start mine in February too!! :) x

ed dixon - Mon, 26/09/2011 - 07:56

 What is the first assignment?

I can't find out because I have been sent SO much information, and I have no idea where and what I am meant to start with.

Emma Broxton - Mon, 26/09/2011 - 12:07

Look in your assignment booklet, the replacement one that should have arrived recently.

The books are numbered on the spines, book one is Reputations.

Emma.

Lee Rogers - Tue, 27/09/2011 - 13:16

Alternatively look under Assessment Resources from the AA100 Module Website & Record where you find a pdf version of the updated assignment booklet.

ed dixon - Mon, 26/09/2011 - 14:39

Thanks, but those links don't work Lee.

Emma, I haven't received the replacement.

edit: I have found my original assignment booklet. has anyone else received the new one yet?

Lee Rogers - Tue, 27/09/2011 - 13:22

Ed,

Hi, I was going to say the links might not work, but the last time I did, they worked!

I've edited the link to the assignment booklet (which might now work) but essentailly from StudentHome chose the AA100 module website & record, once this opens there should be a link on the left-hand side to Resources and listed under that Assessment resources, that's where you'll hopefully find the booklet.

Daniel Featherstone - Wed, 28/09/2011 - 18:02

I got mine early last week

ANDREA WATERS - Mon, 26/09/2011 - 15:52

Hi Can anyone help? I have tried to contact helpdesk - but no such luck! I might be being really thick and its probably obvious.

Where can I find; Study timetable, tutorials, material checklist, study planner and how to upload a dummy assignment?

When I log in all I have is list of Account, change password and open learn which I click on then its a vast site!

Thank you

Andrea x

ed dixon - Wed, 28/09/2011 - 11:43

Thanks Lee. They still don't work, and I can't find StudentHome.

When I go to the Module website link it says I am not studying.

Lee Rogers - Wed, 28/09/2011 - 13:02

Ed,

In which case I think you need to check with student services that you are correctly registered.

Try  Learner Support Team on +44 (0)117 9259336 during office hours, or the UK advice line on 0870 333 1 444

Hello everyone my name is Dan and I live in Whitby, North Yorkshire. Im 21 and im starting this course in October. Not going to lie im a little bit nervous after dropping out of uni a couple of years ago. Since then ive been volunteering at my local college teaching kids history and helping them with coursework.

Now ive decided teaching is what i want to do im determined to pass Open University!

Currently reading through the material as fast as I can!

Send me a message if anyone wants to chat so at least ill know someone on Saturday!

Kara Hayden - Thu, 29/09/2011 - 11:16

Hi Dan,

I'm Kara, I also really want to be a teacher and after my degree I plan on either doing a PGCE or Placement based Teacher Training course. Feeling really nervous about this method of study though, as it is unlike anything i've ever done before...I can't believe the start date is Saturday!!

Daniel Featherstone - Fri, 30/09/2011 - 22:30

Well after i left Uni, I decided iwas going to do something productive so i voluntered at my local College. I've been there ever since last november so i must be doing something right! I help kids with coursework like BTEC sport and workskills. I also go into History lessons ad help kids in there.

Yeah in what you mean im not used to it either but im sure you will get the hang of it. You going to the intro in the morning?

I have to leave at 7 to get there! Haha!

I've actually got the DVD of Doctor Faustus by Stage On Screen of a performance at the Greenwich Theatre, London.  The play is unabridged and is performed with the complete A-Text as per the set book.  It has English subtitles.

David Hudson - Fri, 14/10/2011 - 14:12

Hi People,

I'm Dave Hudson who has started the course on the 1st and only just getting in to it. I'm 58 and taking this on after maaaannny years away from using the old brain matter in this way. I'm working overseas and so had to wait until I was home to open my parcel. I'm now head down in thecatch up mode, and once again working away. It's really good to see the wide range of ages on the course, and I know I'll be on at times asking a question (or7) on things that may appear glaringly obvious to some, such is the worry of gaps in doing things like this. A daunting but exciting feel over it all. I live in Cornwall and will next be back in January 12.

Good luck to all

Anwen Grant - Fri, 14/10/2011 - 16:12

Hi all! I'm hopefully (got to sort out financial support application, DSA etc) going to be starting AA100 in February. I did a year of university straight out of school in 1997, but I have pretty bad ADD which was only diagnosed a few years later, and that combined with some other stuff to result in me totally failing the whole year. I intended to take a year out, but ended up having a baby instead. She's nearly 12 now, and I'm out of work due to illness, so it seems like a good time to try studying again. I'm pretty nervous, but excited, too. I'm a bit worried about having to obtain the diagnostic report required to prove my ADD (I've just been diagnosed by local psychiatrist, which apparently isn't enough) but I have mental and physical health issues, too, so hopefully I can still get some support for those even if I can't get the ADD report.

I've got three of the set books already, have had a bit of a look at the Seamus Heaney, seemed interesting though I was feeling a bit ill and can't actually remember much detail! I'm also looking for a decent study skills guide which isn't all about going to lectures every day and such...

Susan Kenny - Wed, 19/10/2011 - 15:25

Hi,phoned OU today to enqiire about any funding and they signed me up to the course starting Feb!Bit shell shocked really and not sure if I'm cut out for it,but I'll give it a go :0).I'm a mum of 5 and took my last exam OCNW level 3 about 9 years ago so I'm a bit rusty.I just hope there's a lot of help.

David Hudson - Thu, 20/10/2011 - 17:56

Dave Hudson here, is anyone else having problems getting in to the site to view, well anything? I'm trying to find the eTMA to download and all the rest but simply can't. I can imagine it's me doing something  wrong somewhere, but would appreciate any help at this point.

Regards in anticipation!

Dave

Lee Rogers - Fri, 21/10/2011 - 10:25

David,

Hi, it may be there is something wrong, but essentially from StudentHome chose the AA100 module website & record, once this opens there should be a series of links listing the Online TMA/EMA service, Assessment, Tutor etc...

Hope this helps.

Lee

David Hudson - Fri, 21/10/2011 - 14:37

Lee,

Thanks for that. My problem is I can sign in and it gets me in to the system, but there is nowhere to go after apart from the pages about the OU and courses. I can't find my student web page at all. I can pull up this, obviously, but that is all. I have tried to enter some sites but have been refused. I have sent a message to the it people and awaiting a reply now. It's all probably me at some point, we'll get there.

Thanks again, and good luck with your course.

Dave

 Hey all :-)

Hi all, I'm starting AA100 in Feb 12 ater 7 years working for a bank and being a parent, i'm quite excited n nervous :-)

I live in Halifax, West Yorkshire...anyone near me signing up?

Anyone have any ideas on what to do before the course starts? I've ordered the materials n hoping to be able to get a head start. I've got a degree in forensic psychology but I've never studied an arts degree before or studied online so I should imagine the style of learning from preston uni etc will be quite different.

I had planned for around 20 hrs of study a week (Im a single parent to my 4 yr old and I work part time as a community carer) but I have lots of commitments so I'm really going to have to plan my time properly n be all responsible about this :-)

I'm hoping to complete a degree in English Lit and creative writing (B66) whilst my daughter's still young and then go on to do a PGCE and teach in secondary schools, thats the big plan anyway :-)

Hoping to make some new friends and get good grades :-)

jenny

Nigel Pamenter - Wed, 11/01/2012 - 13:15

Hi Jenny,

Spotted your post in amongst all the many nervous Feb starters, me included!

Like you, the 'grand plan', (though it may well change over 6 years!), is to complete this BA and get on the Graduate Teacher Training Programme, plus the PGCE, oh and I need to squeeze GCSE Maths and Science in too, (and gain classroom experience, etc), then I plan to start teaching some cheeky monkeys!  Having a two-year old and a fifteen-year old gives me a raft of hands-on experience, (!), now for the serious stuff, like reading books, learning from everything and everyone and trying my absolute best!

I plan to communicate with everyone through Facebook, as there too many similar forums to these!

I'm off to continue battling through Doctor Faustus :)

Nigel
