Hello again Saira, and anyone else who may be reading this,
I wouldn't say I'm an OU pro...but I do have 'form' so I'm not totally in the dark. Neither of my modules so far have had telephone contact with tutor, so that'll be interesting!
I'm actually following my heart by returning to English - I did science as I had taken none at school and wanted to have a bit of an idea what my teenagers and husband were talking about! My real love is foreign languages, but having been made redundant from a job in a primary school teaching French (so that the class teachers could teach it after a 5 day course!) I am very sceptical about the English and MFLs so I'm sticking with the core subjects i.e. Maths and English.
I've been lurking in AA100 and U214 forums (fora?) to see what they seem like, as that's the route I'd really like to take.
Michelle Dearden - Sun, 08/04/2012 - 10:28
Hi Saira,
Yes I have, it looks very helpful and hopefully it'll be a great way of saving a few pennies!
Sue, I will hopefully 'see' you in AA100 and U214 - although I won't be doing AA100 until Feb 2013 as I will either take a break between the end of Y180 (October 12) and the start of AA100 (February 13) or do another Openings course Y176 (something to do with young people - too early in the morning for this!).
I guess I'll see how it goes with the new baby.
Anyone else aiming for AA100 in Feb?
Saira Baker - Tue, 10/04/2012 - 15:23
Hello All,
I may have missed the date when we receive our course materials - does anyone know when this is? I thought it was four weeks before but I maybe mistaken!
Thanks!
Saira x
Angela McLean - Wed, 11/04/2012 - 13:12
My page says that they were sent out on the 3rd to arrive by the 13th. No sign yet though.
Angela McLean - Wed, 18/04/2012 - 17:37
I called OU the other day and they told me that the date I have on my student page is only a computer generated dat and not the real one. The course materials haven't been sent out yet.
Michelle Dearden - Wed, 11/04/2012 - 15:09
Going to sound like an idiot - lack of sleep due to teething toddler - but we don't have to buy our set books do we? I keep seeing them advertised for sale - for example on amazon - but I'm sure they must send us the course material we need. I know later on when I do literature courses I'll have to buy novels etc that we cover.
Help?
Saira Baker - Wed, 18/04/2012 - 20:51
Hi Guys, I haven't been able to get on to this site for a while. I hope it was just due to maintenance and not my laptop giving up the ghost! I don't think we have to buy any set books do we? I know that AA100 onwards we do. Has anyone found their way around the online library yet?
I can feel my brain cells exploding to make room for learning....not long now! Is anyone thinking of taking any classical studies courses? I asked about doing a combined degree with History but communication seems to be a bit slow.
Hope all is well with one and all
Saira x
Robyn Bateman - Thu, 19/04/2012 - 09:28
Hi Saira
Don't worry, your laptop isn't to blame, Platform's been having some technical issues which are all sorted now. Phew!
Hi Robyn, Thanks for the links! I need to ask if it is possible to do History with Classical Studies otherwise I am going to have to make some difficult choices with the modules!
Saira Baker - Mon, 30/04/2012 - 00:51
Good luck with the course one and all! Material despatch iminent! Do check in here for a catch up across the regions.

Hi everyone, I'm also starting in June. Testing the waters before diving in to a history degree.
I'm 23 from Dundee, have a 2 year old son and work full time.
Looking forward to learning again!
Saira Baker - Wed, 02/05/2012 - 16:31
Hi Rachel,
Which pathway are you thinking off for your degree? I've pretty much made up my mind to follow Ancient History but once I've taken my next module I may change my mind! Good luck with this course - I hope everyone posts back during the module - hopefully we can help eachother out!

Lorraine Mcdonnell - Thu, 03/05/2012 - 14:43
Hi everyone,
I'm also starting Y180 in June to test the water for a history degree. This is my first degree as up until now I been doing office work in the city of London. I have 3 children my youngest being 2 and am desperate to acheive a degree with a career change of teaching in mind (at the moment).. Will be nice to communicate with you all during the course!!
Good Luck
Lorraine
Saira Baker - Sat, 05/05/2012 - 17:08
Hi Lorraine, What History degree pathway are you thinking of? Good luck with this module! Hopefully we will get to communicate along with way I'm hoping ot follow the Ancient History pathway x
Debbie Webber - Sat, 05/05/2012 - 12:58
Hi everyone1 I've signed up do this course and another 15-credit one (Y176 understanding children). I don't think I would have if I wasn't trying to squeak into the OU under transitional fees.
However, having read people raving about this course on a forum (not sure which one!) I'm glad I have. It's been 25 loooong years since I last studied properly (did try an OU course in 2007 but it was the wrong time) that I think I will need help in writing essays.
Currently, I'm a stay-at-home mum to five children but feel with lots of organisation and discipline I shall have enough time and will manage my OU studies. Enthusiasm I have lots of! Anyway, time will tell...
I plan to do a BA in Humanities with history but will decide after I've done A100 which I'll sign up for on June 1.
One thing that does bother me slightly is the OU website. I find it hard to navigate. For instance, I lost you lot once and I couldn't think how to find you! This forum is tucked away in a folder in Arts and Humanities on Platform but there is another one on the OUSA forum. Argh! Is there a link to the groups/forums we've joined from our StudentHome page does anyone know?
I am computer literate and forum savvy normal and wondered if it was me or if the OU is kind of confusing?! Doesn't bode well for my studies does it?!
Lovely to meet you all and will be popping in no doubt (if I can remember how to find you).
Deb x
Saira Baker - Sat, 05/05/2012 - 17:11
Hi Debbie, Nice to 'meet' you. I might look into making this particular more accesible to those of us who are on it so far. It seems that a lot of us can really help eachother as we are studying and it would be a shame to lose contact. Like you I am computer savvy but I am also still navigating my way around the whole website. Fortunately I am on here so often I don't lose my way any more. Good luck with your studies x
Debbie Webber - Tue, 22/05/2012 - 22:21
Hi Saira!
This forum is lovely, hence my distress at "losing" you all! I think I need to take a leaf out of your book and spend a bit more time on here so it all becomes a bit more second nature!
I guess we must all have our materials now. It all feels exciting but scary! Good luck to you too xx
Sue Steele - Wed, 16/05/2012 - 16:10
Hi Deb. Ha ha ...just took me about 20 minutes to find this group again too. I was beginning to think I had dreamt it all!! You sound a similar age and stage to me...I have two teenagers and have not really engaged my brain much for 18 odd years (very odd ones, some of them!) apart from doing OU Understanding Autism (so many complicated socio-scientific terminologies) and an introductory science module. I'm sure you'll be fine ...I have really enjoyed the 15 pointers I have taken, and feel quite desperate to get my teeth into something more substantial now, but I know I need some essay writing practice.
Can't wait to get materials...have any of you had them yet?
Debbie Webber - Tue, 22/05/2012 - 22:16
Hi Sue!
Sorry for belated reply but my old laptop died a death on me but it's replacement arrived today so now I'm raring to go.
My materials have arrived and while it all looks rather daunting I'm sure it will all seem familiar very soon (she says hopefully!). Either way, it's a lovely distraction from worrying about eldest's GCSE's.
It's lovely to have this forum where everyone's going through it all at the same time! Today I emailed my tutor on my other Openings course and listened to Bob Dylan sing (amid all the usual family chaos!).
Rachel Small - Sat, 05/05/2012 - 17:21
I'm not sure yet which pathway I'll take. Keeping an open mind. Might change direction entirely in the end haha

Hello all
Anyone received their pack yet? I see they were despatched on 11 May so must be imminent. Looking forward to keeping in touch. Like many of you I have studied English and History to a higher level, but Art History is a foreign country! Keeping an open mind at the moment, although am intending to pursue History in some form.
Note to self - remember to bookmark this page before I go!
Sue Steele - Thu, 17/05/2012 - 11:43
Hi Lyn (and anyone else reading) What a great idea - why didn't I think of bookmarking the page .
I've just received my materials and had a quick shufty at them. Made the mistake of looking at the assignment titles and thought 'ooh-er' then shut the booklet sharpish. After all, if I already knew how to answer the questions I wouldn't be tackling the module, would I?
Lorraine Mcdonnell - Thu, 17/05/2012 - 09:48
I received my pack on monday, so sure they are imminent!! Sara, not sure which path I am going to follow yet the goal is a degree in history, but every time I start background reading for a subject I become engrossed. I have been reading up on art history which I never thought that I would be interested in. I'm hoping the same will happen with poetry!! Therefore I am going to study the Arts past and present in october but from there see where my studing takes me.

Hi Lorraine and One and All! My course materials arrived today but without the nice black document bag :( never mind I'm sure it will arrive soon! Can't wait to get started now - it will be nice to keep in touch and help each other out along the way. I'm very nervous about doing the art history section as I just don't understand modern art or how to approach it. I suppose that is what this course is for! Haven't had a chance to look through the materials yet so I will do that tonight. I may end up doing a degree in art history! Speak soon.

Don't panic!I try to create a picture of what is happening, for example:
The crane is stood by a pond (or similar) and because the rain is so heavy the water levels have risen making him legs look shorter.
This is only my interpretation, there will be loads of different views - all are valid.
Saira Baker - Tue, 22/05/2012 - 21:21
Thanks Michelle!
I went over it a few times and I think I've got the hang of it one thank goodness! X

Re your question about Classical Studies, you might find this video interesting. We spoke to Jessica Hughes, a lecturer in Classical Studies here at the OU, and I have to confess I had no idea the subject was so fascinating.
There's also this one by Professor Helen King on ancient medicine and Gladiator.
