Why are you studying B62?

What made you decide that B62 (Computing and IT) was the degree for you?

Are you looking for a new career? Or are you already in the industry but looking for a qualification to match your experience and skills? Perhaps it's just out of interest.

Personally I'm a career changer who has always had an interest in computers and what they can do.

I enjoy working with computers and studied for a Computing degree at Bath University. I didn't end up getting any qualifications unfortunately, and after attempting for a while to find a low-level job in IT (and kept getting rejected in favour of the more qualified candidates) I decided to have another go at getting a degree. Student loans and another brick uni were out of the question, so I turned to the Open Uni in favour of paying for the courses myself while I earn money.

My reasons are much the same as Amy's

(Bit of a rant time! lol)

Been working in the Industry on and off for nearly 12 years, though i probably know as much as those that have crammed in all those Microsoft Certifications, i spent my time fixing things for clients rather than studying for Certification exams.

Now, due to personal reasons I has to leave my work a few years ago (more like pushed out the door *another long story* ) to look after a family member.

Now I'm trying to get back into the workforce and you know what! the old axium is true!

"It's easier to get a job when your working!"

I've went for job interviews for companies that have IT deaprtments I could run single handedly, but have been lucky to get past the inital "hello" when they see i've no Degree or Microsoft bit of paper.

I hope that the fact i'm on the path towards a BSc might help me get my foot in the door to more jobs!

and hey! a BSc Degree at the end of it can't hurt! lol

Hi all

My reason for choosing the B62 degree is pure and simply a career change. Back in the late 80's/early 90's I was training to be a computer engineer, working for a local computer company that covered the whole country. My main area at the time was in the Workshop, repairing customers computers and providing technical support to clients. Back then the most powerfull computer had the 386 processor and they cost the earth, lol. Unfortunately for me, the company was taken over, and they closed down the workshop and I found myself unable to get another job in the same field. So for the next 20 yrs, I spent most of the time doing warehouse work, and driving fork lift trucks. This has led to health problems requiring me to under-go hip surgery last year, and I am having my other hip operated on in October. I am only 39, but my body feels like that of a 60 yr old, lol.

So anyway. I decided to try and get back into the computer business. I am always messing with computers, and people always seem to call on me when ever they have problems.

Having never studied with the OU before, or done any higher eduction before, I am some what nervous about the whole thing, but I am looking forward to starting my level 1 course TU100 in October.

Sorry for the long rant. Hope you don't mind. lol

Andy

I'm long term sick and wanted something to keep my brain from completely atrophying. I also wanted to get a degree that would allow me to work from home in the future if my health improves. Therefore I started out studying the Web Design Certificate courses and migrated into the programming courses when I realised I loved programming for its own sake.
