Children’s literature
Whether you’re interested in children’s literature as a parent, teacher, librarian or literary student, EA300 Children’s literature will provide a fascinating study of the history and purposes of children’s stories, from its beginnings in 18th-century chapbooks and fairy tales to present-day examples of fiction and current trends in publishing. Students will study a range of literature from the past 150 years, including fiction, poetry, picture books and plays. Texts studied include Little Women and Harry Potter. The level 3 course starts in October, with registration closing on 11 September.
Energy measurement
Against a backdrop of high energy costs and concerns over global warming there has never been a better time to take control of your household energy consumption. A new 10-point short course T152 Energy measurements at home gives you the tools to do something practical about it in a way that suits your domestic circumstances and so goes way beyond the official, general advice. With an Energy Performance Certificate now required when you sell or let any house in the UK, what you learn on this course could also help put value on your home. No great technical knowledge is required – students will need only to be able to use a computer – and all the energy calculations are done for you. Registration closes on 10 September for an October start. For more information call +44 (0)845 300 6090.
Classical Greek
The literature of ancient Greece may seem a million miles away from the realities of modern life, but there are actually some very contemporary themes running through it. And in A275 Reading classical Greek: language and literature you’ll get a chance to look at themes which include betrayal, revenge, clashes of modern and traditional cultural values – and even the dark arts of spin doctoring. The level 2, 60-point course starts in October; registration closes on 11 September.

Environment: journeys through a changing world
The first presentation of U116 Environment: journeys through a changing world takes place in October and is a 60-point, level one course. In a fast-changing world we are experiencing pressure from climate change, growing demands for finite resources and the extinction of many plants and animals. This course introduces you to environmental studies and the issues arising from environmental change. It shows how people are seeking positive solutions to environmental challenges where you live, in the Arctic, Africa, the Amazon and China. It also develops the key skills and concepts needed to understand our changing world. You do not need any prior knowledge to study this course, just an interest in the future of our planet. Registration closes on 11 September this year.
