The first of three programmes on the London markets will be broadcast on Thursday 24 May at 9pm on BBC2 touching on issues of food security, climate change and our role in the global food system.

This series is the story of the food we eat, told by the people who know it best – the buyers and sellers on the market floor, together with the many different communities of Londoners who shop there.

The first episode, The Fish Market: Inside Billingsgate, gives a unique insight into the heart of Billingsgate Market and the people who work there, and uncovers the tough times facing the fish merchants – dwindling fish stocks, job insecurity, the rise of the supermarkets and a deep recession. This episode is repeated on BBC HD on 26 May at 10.15pm.

The following two episodes are The Meat Market: Inside Smithfield and The Fruit and Veg Market: Inside New Spitalfields.

New OU/BBC series looks at the history of women in religion

Photo of Bettany Hughes
The new OU/BBC co-production of Divine Women will first broadcast tonight (Wednesday 11 April) at 9pm on BBC2 tracing the hidden, and often controversial, history of women in religion.

The new three-part series will look at how, from the dawn of time, humans have felt the need to worship, to find a purpose and bring a shape to human existence. Women have always been at the heart of our understanding of the divine but, historian Bettany Hughes (pictured) argues, this part of our history has often been ignored, buried away.

To accompany the new series, the OU is issuing a booklet that explores five controversial areas around goddesses and women in religion. To obtain a copy of the booklet, and for more information on the series, visit OpenLearn.

To complement the series, OpenLearn is inviting people to vote and add their comments on women in religion on a dedicated discussion hub.
