Hi there, just signed up for the course yesterday. I'm hoping this course will help get me back into learning and set me off on a new careers direction. I haven't done any studying for 15 years so am a little nervous about starting, particularly as its distance learning. Looking forward to being able to chat with other people doing the course too.

Hello Cath,
We're quite in the same boat, I haven't been studying for a few years and I'm also a bit nervous. Like you, I am new to distance learning and I hope I will manage to mantain the discipline required for completing this course. What career change did you have in mind?
Siria
Hi Siria,
It's nice to know there's someone else out there. I did marketing and pr for quite a few years and have been a stay a home mum for the past 3 years, but I'm now thinking of going into counselling and maybe life coaching.
How about you?
Cath
My name is Sally and I am a returning student. I studied for my degree with the OU. After a few winters with time on my hands I am here to attempt to learn another skill set. Why this course? It seemed like a good starting place. I am looking forward to 'meeting' a new group of fellow students.
Hi everyone. My name is Alison and I'm new to OU and trying to get my head around this website!
Did everyone get their student planner through the post or do we download it on the 13th when it becomes available on here, if indeed it does.
Happy studying fellow D171's :)
Alison
Hey Alison,
I've been wondering the same thing about the study planner. Lets hope it appears on 13th. I'm finding the website a bit of a labyrinth too.
Cath
It is one of those site where the more you visit & use it the easier it becomes. It has all changes since I was here previously though.
The study planner was available online last time.
Hi :)
I'm Kim, turned 24 yesterday from Scotland and this is my first OU course. I'm doin this course to see if it's something I want to continue with.
I've worked in a stressfull call centre for 3 years and have grown to hate it but can't leave because it pays the bills :P Plus I'm just glad to actually have a job but i don't want to be there for the rest of my working life.
I haven't done any kind of study since I was last in college 5 years ago and when I got that textbook in the post it made me very nervous lol.
Need to just take it a step at a time :)
Hi everyone :)
I graduated a couple of years ago from a university with teachers and classrooms, and am a bit nervous about this distance-learning thing, having never done it before. I'm literally overwhelmed with the amount of information I've been given before the course even starts and just have no idea where to start to look at this information!
Best get my thinking cap on and get stuck in to this course! I'm glad I'm not the only one who has been facing some difficulties!
Elena
Hi everyone,
I've just been going through the forum boards and am starting to feel like I can actually find my way around the site, which is a good start.
Have you found anyone in your local areas doing the course yet?
Cath
hi cath

Regards Lesley
Hello everyone,
I am Isabelle and I am new to the O U. I graduated last year from my University in France and I need to study at home now as I am working on side. This course sounds exciting but there are a lot of readings!
Hope that we all be going on well with it and help each other if needed.
Regards
Isabelle
Hi all,
I am returning to study after many years and am interested in counselling. The course book looks comprehensive for an introduction. Hope we can all support each other as we go.
Bob
Hiya,
I'm due to start D171 in April and am very nervous! I've never tried distance learning before, so not sure how that will sit with me. I'm very interested in grief counselling, and am hoping I can offer this as a service, in time, along side my Holistic Therapies.
Nice to meet you
Hi everyone, if you still visit!
Hi Gail,
You are the first person I have found doing the same course! I aim to eventually do the Psychology degree, and would like to offer volunteer counselling in schools and online, if I can get paid work, great, but I am limited due to disability. I am actually very excited about this course, itching to start! It has been 17 years since I did any learning and 23 years since I left college so I need to get my brain working again.
I look forward to getting to know you and any other visitors.
Kelly.
Hello everyone,
I'm Christina, I'm probably the youngest person on here as I'm only 19! I just dropped out of De Montfort University after about two months of studying Film Studies and Journalism. Although I am extremely interested in these subjects, I couldn't see myself making a career out of it. I'm also incredibly shy and living in student halls all the way in Leicester (when I'm from Yorkshire) turned out to be too much for me to handle. So here I am, starting the Introduction to Counselling course hoping to do an Open degree based on Psychology and Counselling whilst I work full-time. I look forward to getting to know other people on the course :)
Christina
Hello everyone!
My name is Andreea, I'm 25, and I started this module in April... I started University a few years ago, but I didn't have the chance to finish it, so I decided to start again. I used to study Sociology and Psychology, and now I am interested in Counselling.
I am currently working full-time, so I have limited time for studying, but I find it all very interesting.
Christina, if you are interested in Counselling and Psychology, have a look at D240, (which I am currently doing as well as D171). It is very interesting.
All the best to all of you!
Andreea
