Please feel free to join in and add comments and ideas

I do not want this to be "my" forum though I set it up If anyone feels they wish to help admin it just ask

Hi

It's been a while (longer than I want to admit to) since I did any serious studying too but I'm really looking forward to this course. My previous degree was  German Studies and involved a different sort of study (literature essays etc) from how I imagine Psychology to be so I'm more or less starting from scratch. I'm also hoping to end up with a Psychology Degree and hopefully get a more rewarding and interesting job than those I've done in the past and am applying for now.

I live in Edinburgh and so far have "met" (pn Facebook) one other person in Scotland who's starting DSE141 in November. Lastnight I managed to start a Facebook page for our course so anyone on Facebook's welcome to take part in that too - the more the merrier.

I've actually started making notes on the first topic about why people harm others and am looking forward to getting my course materials in October.

I'll be looking in regularly (probably every day).

Cheers

Amanda

Hi,

My last degree was in nursing which was a few years ago, but look forward to getting my head back into studying.  Im starting the DSE141 to eventually end up with a degree/honors in criminology and social policy.  Id like to go on and work with young offenders and within the adult prisons.

Im in Scotland aswell (Inverness).

Take care

Margo

Les Haworth - Mon, 05/09/2011 - 17:24

Hi Amanda

The title looks familiar but where did I see it?

"why people harm others" Where can I find it and make a few notes?

Thanks

Les

Oh and what is the Facebook link?

Carole McClenaghan - Mon, 05/09/2011 - 15:01

Hi Les, Margo and Amanda.  I'm Carole. I live  in Belfast and have also signed up for DSE141 starting 5th November 2011. I have no study beyond 'o' levels in 1978 apart from K101 which I did through OU last year, so I hope I can keep pace with you guys. I may need your help!. looking forward to the course. It will definately be a challenge for me. Carole

Les Haworth - Mon, 05/09/2011 - 15:28

Hi all

Thanks for joining the group I am starting to study again after a very long time

I am in Twickenham and I am far too old to die young! I hope to get a BSc Hons in Psychology one fine day in the future

Facebook sounds like a good idea as this forum thing is a bit clunky

Keep in touch

Please

Les

hi Les, facebook does sound good, but I'm not great on the computer. On facebook search I looked up DSE141 but unfortunately only found a group for those starting DSE141 May 2011 . I must be doing something wrong. If you find out the name of the group set up for those of us starting in Nov 2011, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know (or post a link for me to ask to join it) Carole

Jan Howarth - Mon, 17/10/2011 - 14:35

Hi Carole, I'm daily on Facebook and I struggled to find the DSE141 Groups.

Bridget Prole - Mon, 05/09/2011 - 17:35

Hi

I'm starting this course too and really looking forward to it.  I too find these forums a little lengthy to access.  I haven't done a degree before but have done some higher level studies through my work  with young people and am hoping that I will manage this course alongside full time employment.  Good luck to all!

Bridget

I am ing also starting the course DD141 in November and think it is a really good idea for someone to set up this group. I have been out of education for a while and am just about to embark on a couple of courses  this year. I am looking forward to studying but at the same time am a little aprehensive. I do however not have a great deal of knowledge where the computer is concerned and help with things like links and accessing information would grately be appreciated. good luck to all new starters                                                                 Lisa.

Carole McClenaghan - Fri, 09/09/2011 - 13:38

les, I used the link on that page called  DSE 141 Discovering Psychology Nov '11 (Putting the Psycho into Psychology) and there was a request button there. Maybe you've found it already. Carole

Nicky Bashforth - Wed, 05/10/2011 - 20:54

Did you know?

A quick search on Metacrawler reveals this whole thread is publicly available for everyone to read.

Iona Campbell - Sat, 10/09/2011 - 17:03

Hi, My name's Iona,

I've signed up for DSE141 starting in Nov 11.  This will be my first OU course, so I'm a bit apprehensive, but excited to be doing my first ever university course.  I've only studied to college level in the past.

I live in the West of Scotland, and would really appreciate the support of the community, as it's been a while since college.  I started my search for knowledge two years ago with ECDL, then Advanced ECDL Word.  I think I've caught the learning bug.

Look forward to keeping in touch with others studying this winter.

Regina Bryce - Sat, 10/09/2011 - 18:30

A bit late to the party but wanted to say hello too. At the moment I'm on my last assignment for DD131, Introducing the Social Sciences. I hope to start Discovering Psychology in November.  My aim is for a BSc in Social Policy and Criminology.

It's also been a while for me since I last studied but I'm enjoying it immensely.

Hi to everybody.

Andrew Laker - Mon, 12/09/2011 - 11:37

Hi Everyone.

I'm hoping to gain a BSC (Hons) in Psychology and this is my first course en route. I have previously studied with the OU when I gained a BSc (Hons) in Sociology but that was so far back in the middle ages (1997),that I am effectively starting again. If this course is as enjoyable as the last one we are in for some good times. I live in Dunfermline Fife and I also belong to the disabled students group. I'm really looking forward to working with you.

Andy Laker

Amanda Chapman - Sun, 18/09/2011 - 03:58

Hi

I'm close to finishing Introducing the Social Sciences and will then start Discovering Psychology in November. Eventually I hope it all leads to a degree. Time will tell!

Shelley Pritchard - Thu, 22/09/2011 - 14:36

This will be my first OU course, hoping to achieve a Bsc (Hons) Psychology at the end of it. Very nervous and excited to be starting. Noticed a lot of Scots are taking this course, anyone from around the Shropshire area?

Richard Lee-Jarman - Fri, 23/09/2011 - 15:49

Hi All, I am Richard from Doncaster...

Doing DSE141 and SDK125 at same time (must be mad). Started out doing business studies but got more involved in the psychology side, so here I am swapping degree but not sure what to do as post-grad avenue (will find out i'm sure during study)

Corrina Barber - Thu, 13/10/2011 - 11:48

My name is Corrina, I have just been accepted on this course today. Studying Y183 (Starting with Psychology) alongside the DSE141. Its been a long time since I have study, but I'm in for the long haul.

Good luck to everyone :)

Amy Hunt - Thu, 29/09/2011 - 22:43

Hi there,

My name is Amy, I am one of the OUs babies at 18. I am starting DSE141 in November, and although I am really looking forward to learning something new I am rather nervous, as I have never actually studied  psychology before; Nor have worked on anything above college level.

How much experiance do others have with the subject, am I alone in my madness?

Good Luck

Amy

Shelley Pritchard - Thu, 20/10/2011 - 13:46

Hi Amy, I'm an OU baby too! Done psychology at A level but thats it. Feeling your madness :)

Robyn Bateman - Fri, 30/09/2011 - 09:39

Welcome to the OU Amy! There's a young students group here on Platform, which you might find useful. And don't worry about the nerves, that's completely natural and you'll soon get to grips with it all. Enjoy!

Hi everyone!

I am Fiona.  I am in the midlands.  I'm still trying to get my head around all this... all a new world to me!  So the first topic is 'why people harm others' then?  Where did you find that out?  I shall start reading up on it right away though!! Thanks!
