Hi
The Open University produces a booklet called Becoming a teacher which should help you. YOu can download a pdf at http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/atoz/recognition-leaflets/becoming_a_teacher.pdf
I'd aim for a decent amount of subject content relevant to the national curriculum, but choose the area(s) that appeal within that. Maths and science are in relatively short supply, a module in, say, French could be helpful (as primaries are trying to deliver MFL), and given Gove's latest set of bright ideas, some simple computing wouldn't do any harm. But it's important to do courses you feel confident with - you want to aim for a good degree, and the above are ideas, not requirements.
You'll also need a fair bit of work experience to get onto a primary PGCE or equivalent.
Thank you for all your replies!!!!
Hi, I am also looking to become a primary school teacher and was advised to contact my local PGCE or SCITT provider.
I contacted our local (Essex) SCITT provider and they advised me that for primary education there is no specific subject area that you need to follow to get onto the training, but that you need a 2:2 and some school based experience.
I am currently working as an LSA in a primary school and am going to do an Open Degree BSc (Hons) with my first module being Exploring Science S104, as science is one of the sought after subjects in primary schools.
You have to consider employability, not just eligibility for the post-grad courses. Try contacting some of your local primary schools to ask what they would look for when employing a teacher, to make sure your modules will be worthwhile.
