Good morning, fellow forum-ites....
There's an issue which really interests me and I wondered what people on here thought about it....I've had the chance to speak to quite a few OU students now and it seems like most people's main reason for studying is career-related - gaining a qualification either to change career or to move forward in their current job.
This made me feel quite strange. I signed up for Science because I love astronomy and you can do a specialised BSc, an idea I find pretty exciting right now. I like the job I do already (I'm a security guard) and future careers were the last thing on my mind when I signed up for the OU.
As a Pagan, my religion also had a huge influence on my choice of course - I feel privileged to study the night sky, something I have worshipped for years in the form of the Egyptian star goddess Nuit.
What are your motivations for studying with the OU? And if you have Pagan beliefs (I appreciate not everyone on here may practice) did they have any influence in your choice?
Looking forward to hearing more.
Blessed Be
Therese

Hi Therese
I've chatted to a fair few OU students over the years who've studied just for the love of a subject. Perhaps it's not something connected to their work (although you're right, very often it is) and they want to find out more about a subject they enjoy, just for fun and enjoyment. And I've met a couple of students who already have a BA and study because they want a BSc to go with it. Some may say that's just greedy

My beliefs have nothing to do with me choosing Social Work. I am doing to change my career as I hate my jobs atm. I'm only 21 and am stuck in a deep end job. I want a job that I enjoy and a job that helps people, but also pays well so I can support my family later in life.
If I can later on, after my degree, I would look at courses that I would do for interest only. But I have the rest of my life to do so, and am in no rush :)
Interesting stuff, thanks for your replies. Looks as though I wasn't too far off beam then, as I must say I haven't met anyone yet (apart from myself!) who is studying just because they're into their subject.
That said, if I did get my BSc and someone offered me a job in NASA I guess I'd have to go for it....dream on Therese! :-)
Oh and it looks as though we have EIGHT stars of Gnosis rather than 7 now. Groovy!
